"Alternative" beers

i just got a copy of that "Sacred and Medicinal Beer" book (I can't remember the exact name) and it has all kinds of recipes for beers that don't use hops.  I was wondering, has anyone here made any of the beers from this book or anything similar (such as gruit, or mugwort ale or the like)?  Some of the recipes look interesting  but I don't want to waste time and money on something that may be terrible tasting.....

 

Hey! there was a dude talking about hop free brewing in an other board on the forum.  I totally forgot about that reference.  We should link this post over there.
