Bratwurst

Hey has anyone made thier own brats? If so, whats your recipe and how did you do it?

Hmmm...not yet, but I've always wanted to.  Actually, I'm very interested in making my own ground beef as well.

(this is why I need to startup that grilling forum that I've been pondering... tongue)

Never made my own brats, but I have learned the best brats are grilled for a little while.  Then take an aluminum pan---put onions, the brats, beer and ice on the grill.  The ice allows the beer to heat slow enough to give the brats good flavor.

Here's a good recipe for brats:

hey thanks!!

This thread reminds me of growing up on a farm decades ago when we'd butcher. We made our own sausages and there was a version that had potatoes in it, too.

When I get a chance to taste those kind of sausages again, it's very nostalgic.

I haven't made brats, but I have ground my own beef with a counter top grinder.

Thanks for the tip about the ice with the beer.

just an update, my wife got me some attachments for the kitchenaid and a book on how to make sausages, hope to try it soon

Let us know - I'm anxious to hear how it turns out.

Well i did it, i made them and they came out great!!!, i used a recipe for the meat type and ratio to use and i used a premade seasoning mixture, didn't wanna get to overwhelmed and wanted to focus on the technique of preping the meat and stuffing the casings. as i get it down i will post pics especially when i use beer in the recipe.
