Beer Birthday

It was my birthday Sunday, so the wife, kid and I took a trip down to Julios in westborough so I could get some treats.  Here is my Score:

16-22oz bottles
Ayinger DunkelWiesen
Weinstephaner DunkelWiesen
Weinstephaner Original Premium (Helles)
Pretty Things Jack D'Or
Duchesse De Bourgogne
Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar

mixed sixer 12 oz
2 DFH Indian Brown
DFH World Wide Stout
DFH Raison D'etre
DFH Shelter Pale Ale
DFH Midas Touch

1 case of DFH Festina Peche

The german beers were because of the recent BYO dunklewiessn article and discussion here last week.  I have also been wanting to brew a Helles so I bought one of those. Pretty Things brewery has been getting a lot of buzz so I wanted to try their flag ship.  Duchesse De Bourgogne was a need buy because I also want to brew this style too at some point.  The Rogue I can get at my home packy, but I love that beer and wanted a bottle to share with my Dad on Sunday during family dinner.

The DFH mixed sixer I put together because I realized I haven't really tried these beers lately.  While I love the DFH story I haven't really given their beers an honest sampling in years.
The case of Peche was a great deal at  $20.  Its out of season and a little old, but it still tastes great. I'll keep it cold and probably have it drank before the spring comes.  I love those sour beers.

Cheers to me.  I enjoyed a couple peche and an indian brown on saturday.  I drank the hazelnut brown with a smoked ham dinner on Sunday afternoon and enjoyed the shelter pale ale during the super bowl.

Hey Hoppy belated birthday Mike!

Nice buys there. The festina peche is a huge score. That is over half price, and I remember that was one of your favs at the B&Bfest a couple years ago. As far as giving the DFHs another fair shake, I think you have to add Palo Santo Maron in the mix as well. Could be one of my faves. Also, (although much more expensive- I rarely spring for them) the champagne bottles of Fort, and red and white, are unbelievable.

The duchess dr borgogne I had on tap back in the summer, thought it was great, but then I was disappointed when I bought a bottle. We had this at the final tasting before my exam, and the instructor said this is completely different from the last time he had it a few years back, maybe just still green? Anyway, I will be curious to see what you think of it.

I am messing with a few sour batches right now, I will have to get you some when they are ready. I have a couple gallons of tripel that I put brett and pedio into in the summer, I am going to blend that with a few gallons of a neutral wheat extract beer, keg it, then bottle most of the keg into champagnes. I have another 5 gallon batch that has been on Wyeast sour blend for 14 months, I think I am going to do the same with this, blend it into 2 kegs with a neutral wheat- this one I think I want to fruit first.

The last one is a saison (Wade's recipe) that I want to funk up. A guy from another forum is swapping me for a few of my beers, a sour inoculation he made with dregs of orval, ommegeddon, bier d mars, cantillon, la folie, boulevard saison, avery 15, and some roselare as well. So I plan on fruiting that up with the typical oranges and lemons, then funking it up. Hopefully I will have one of these to share next MA brewday! big_smile

happy birthday!  Beer score, Birthday, Superbowl!  Can life get any better?  I submit that it cannot!

Nice haul, man!  I like the Pretty Things Jack D'or.  I've got a bottle of the Baby Tree (Quad) in my fridge that I've been sitting on for a little while, which I would recommend.  Dan Paquette came to my brew club's meeting a few months back and talked to us about his brewing experiences in England and how the industry and culture differs from that here in the US.  He's a pretty cool guy that makes good beer so his brewing venture is definitely one worth supporting.

Duchesse De Bourgogne was my intro to sour beers and I agree with Thirsty about it being a different beast on tap.

I haven't tried the DFH WWS yet.  Can anyone comment on it?  It gets great scores on BeerAdvocate but I don't trust their scores for DIPA's and Imperial Stouts.

I had this a couple of years ago, and green it tastes like you would think- HUGE! Big sweet roast, big hops, for an 18% beer it is to be expected. Then I had some at the DFH dinner at xmas, and Sam had brought a 3 year old keg of this for us to try, and it was mellowed out and oxidized perfect, much less syrupy, no cloying, and was very sherry-like. Flawless. I went out and bought another bottle a week or so later, and was definitely greener. I would love to have the self control to lay this one down for a few years in my cellar.

Happy Birthday Brewchez.  Nice score.  They should have been even nicer to you due to all your interaction with us on brewing....

happy b-day.  Haven't tried those beers myself, so I am not going to comment on them, but it sounds like you like em, so thats what matters....

I like getting mixes of different things. I like to see how brewers paly with ingredients or methods.
It helps inspire my own recipe creation (albeit I like to make well balances session beers) and motivates me to brew more....when am I going to brew again???

Maybe I can squeeze a session in when my wife is in the hsopital???? Naaaa she'd kill me.  And I'll need to stock up on sleep before we bring baby home in another week or so.
