Boulevard Brewing - Smokestack Series

I don't know how many midwesterners have access to beers from Boulevard Brewing Co., Kansas City, MO.  But are starting to do some REALLY incredible craft beers in their "Boulevard Smokestack" Series.  They come in corked brown champagne bottles.

Last night the kids brought over a  "The Sixth Glass"  Quadrupel Ale.  Smooth, rich, wonderful, boy was I shocked this morning when I actually read the label, 10.5% ABV.  No wonder that hot tub felt so good, & I slept so well.

Anyway, there's a whole blurb on them www.smokestack.boulevard.com

I live in KC and toured the brewery when they were starting to test these brews about a year ago, fantastic stuff! All 4 of fthem are really quite good. and pack a whallop! Boulevard is doing some good things, and I really can't wait to get my hands on a bottle of the Long Strange Trippel that was left over from last weekend!

wow thats sounds like something im lookin for

Last weekend I purchased The Sixth Glass. I have enjoyed beers from all over the world along with wines and several fermented herbal recipes and never found one that didn't have some redeeming qaulities until The Sixth Glass. Honestly, I had to spit it out. I found the sweetness over powering and the aroma sickening, but being one that gives second chances I waited a few hours and tried it again. I finished the bottle by pouring it down the drain. While I'm certain some folks might like this stuff I feel I've been scarred for life and will NEVER purchase another product from this brewery again. Lesson learned: BEWARE BUYING A LARGE BOTTLE OF BREW YOU HAVE NEVER TASTED. IT'S THE PERFECT WAY TO BLOW TEN BUCKS.

You wasted your first post to belittle a very fine brew? And your "second chance" was from the same source! Come on! Never try another from this brewery/ Good!!!! Plenty more for the rest of us that know how good they are!

Just a wild guess, but I take it you didn't like this one?

For what its worth, RateBeer gave the Sixth Glass a 94 which is comparable to some of the better Belgian imports, and the entire Smokestack series has had a 91 or better, the Saison Brett is a wonderful brew that received a 98.

crazy13 Just for curiosities sake, what have been some of your favorite brews?

i've tried 3 of the smokestack series the first 2 i bought the third i tried when i toured the brewery and i wasn't 2 impressed with any of them but they tasted better when you got to the end of the bottle personally i like there stout and bully porter both are really good beers

I will agree that everyone is entitled to their opinion and you obviously have yours. However an opinion is just that, and cautioning how to spend others' money needs to have a little more backing then disliking a beer that others herald. In the 20 whatever categories that are now being judged by the BJCP I am sure that anyone can find a style that is not their favorite. If you f-ed up and bought a $10 bottle that does not fit your favorite criteria, chock it up and learn from it and  dont buy any of their beer again. But if it was that bad that it made you spit it out, you have to wonder if others are on the other side of the fence and relishing their extremism. To each his own but let others make that decision for themselves. I have never had this beer, and not to be a d-bag, but that post would turn me off of that beer, and that may be unfair. Sounds like this is a brewery that is trying some nononventional recipes and may not be mainstream niche, but isnt that what craft brew is all about? Big balls and welcome to our forum, we welcome all comments good and bad, (especially if you got some KA recipes) however justify your position- if it makes sense- it makes sense.

Pretty crappy beer i guess? :-p

And these beers are taste tested without knowing who the brewer is.

Congrats!

Still haven't been able to find any of this yet, but I have been looking hard. When many reviews come in respectable, and one jackass tries to diminish, you know there is an alterior motive. F### him and keep brewing award winning beer!

Hey Thirsty,

I tried to find out from the folks at Boulevard how close to MA they got.  Here's the reply.

Thank you for your interest in our beers. Unfortunately at this time we do not distribute anywhere in Massachusetts, and due to legal constraints, we cannot ship beer directly from the Brewery. We distribute our delightful beers in the following states: Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota and parts of Tennessee, Western Illinois and Texas.

You may want to check out www.internetwines.com and www.johnsgrocery.com, they sell our beer and ship directly. If you have someone making a road trip to one of the previous states, I can get you information on distributors and whether or not they carry the Smokestack series. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. Have a great day!

Cheers!

BTW, one of the guys in our family brew group works part time on their specialty bottling line on fridays & is always ending up with the odd bottles that the label was wrong or end of the run, not enough for a full case.  Damn, but ya know it's gotta go somewhere.

Sounds like a great time! I have yet to neet anyone in the brewing community that is not helpful and will not go out of their way to address a customer. Damn I love this industry.
