Harpoon 100 Barrel Series
Check this out: http://lovebeerlovelife.com/
Any you guys back east, who love Harpoon, going to try and give this beer a taste?
Crazy, shellfish in a brew?!?!
just drank a Harpoon winter warmer, which was very good, but I don't think I would like the Oyster Stout....
I love Harpoon. Their IPA is a classic around here..I love the UFO myself. I've had quite a few of the 100 series, and most have been very good. However, I think I will be skipping the seafood sampler..
I'm on the west coast and have only experienced the IPA when visiting boston a few months back. First kegged batch was actually a clone of that beer. Not sure if I would even try this one--but gotta give everything a try at least once.
Maybe if DFH trys a shellfish brew--hah
I'm a big fan of Harpoon's beers except for the winter warmer. I had a great chocolate stout at the brewery a few weeks back that I haven't seen in stores. If you find it definitely pick some up. The oyster stout however I might be passing on. I love stouts but HATE seafood and the idea of putting it in beer kinda bugs me out. I don't know, maybe I'll have to try it just because its something I'd normally wouldn't drink.
Oyster stouts don't really taste like oysters. Flying Fish released one recently with their Exit 1, part of their Exit series. No oyster flavor. As the article states, it adds some protein for head retention and maybe a little dryness, but no shellfish flavor. Unless your allergic to shellfish, you have nothing to fear from it.
Love oysters, love stouts...oyster stout...hmm. Oyster stouts have actually been around for quite awhile, in fact there was a write up about one in zymurgy awhile back. I would of course try it, but I would try just about anything, however even if I did have access to cheap fresh oysters (apparently it takes a great deal of oysters to get the desired characteristics) I don't think I would try and brew one.
I agree with Andrew. I loves oysters & stout.
But I think I'd rather eat the oysters & then wash 'em down with the stout.
And repeat.
I would definitely try it, I always love a good stout and as long as it's not "fishy" I'd probably really like it. Who was the first guy i wonder that said Hey! these oysters are really great lets throw some in the brewpot and see what happens!
Forget necessity being the mother of invention, I think in the brewing world, brewing while finishing off the last bottles of the previous batch is the mother of all accedents that turn out tasty. ![]()
so cheers to the guy who first dumped oysters into the brewpot and liked the result. Way to be the vanguard of weird brewing.
ID
I'll be trying once I get my hands on some. I'll be preferably looking for it on tap.
I would be willing to bet that if you didn't know about the oysters, you'd have no idea that it was an oyster stout.
A friend I have at work had some at the publick house on release night and described it as smooth with a roasted chocolate flavor.... He is not a beer guy. So in short it tastes like stout, not the sea.
There are some experiments I will leave to someone else. Oysters are great, especially with beer. But oysters in a brew??? First off, they would never survive long enough to make it into the brew. They would be slurped up long before then. That's like having a Bruguru Mack & Jack untasted for a full 30 days of aging. I've heard tell about it, but can't say it's ever happened to me.
I had my first Harpoon Oyster Stout last Friday night. It was fantastic! If you're a stout fan, you'd love this beer. I didn't have an opportunity to have oysters with it, but next time I will definitely be downing a 1/2 dozen while I'm drinking another Oyster Stout.
