Rogue Chocolate Stout
So last week I asked about Rogue's Hazelnut Brown Ale and got some nice help with recipe ideas.
This week I tried some Rogue Chocolate Stout. The ingredients mention oats so it seems to be like a chocolate oatmeal stout. I really loved the balance between the chocolate flavoring and the roasted malts. I am also really starting to become intrigued by the pacman yeast strain. I may have to brew some of my regular beers with the pacman strain just to better understand what it brings to the table.
Anyhow I have only on complaint with this beer. It has a noticable citrus flavor and bitterness to it from the damn Cascade hops.... For my palatte this beer would be nearly perfect it they used a more earthy/neutral hop. I just think that American Citrus hop profile messes up an otherwise great malt bill.
Maybe I'll research this one too but sub in some EKG hops!
Cheers!
(FWIW: I also bought another bottle of the Hazelnut too. That went down real nice after a weird day of big events at work)
I'm not sure if this is true but I've heard the Chocolate Stout is the same as their Shakespeare Stout only with the addition of some sort of chocolate extract or chocolate powder.

Interesting... and a smart move business-wise I would say.

Glad you said EKG not fuggles. I just have no luck with fuggles or willamettes. Like drinking mud. Cant go wrong with the EKGs!

What specifically is the problem with fuggles? Is it the brand or "crop" that you have had trouble with? or is it a distinct property of the hop variety itself? I only ask because I have read that this is the traditional hops for porters and stouts and I have chosen it as my base hop for my porter recipe. Would I be better off using EKG? (I have no experience with EKG) if so why? what particular flavor profile does it bring, or not bring if thats the case?
Perhaps I'll substitute EKG for my next batch and see for myself. I don't know though I'll be adjusting the grains and I really like to only tinker with one thing at a time, but if you think the EKG brings that much to the table it may be worth the double sub.

Now you are thinking like a homebrewer.
I like EKG for most of my Enlgish style beers. I am not as averse to fuggles as Thirsty is, but I see his point.
I would suggest you stick with the Fuggles and try the EKG next time.
EKG jsut seems to have a milder, more refined flavor profile that Fuggles.
I haven't used Fuggles in such a long time I can't remember really what they taste like. I don't remember hating them though.
Cheers.
