99 bottles of beer on the wall.......
So my friends like my homebrew, now I have 250-300 Sam Adams, Paulaner, Bass bottles. I soak them in amonia/water to get the labels off and put them in the dishwasher to cleanse. Is it necessary to or advisable to also sanitise them afterwards? I have had no problems to this point but hate to invite problems. Would love to know secrets/tips. Thanks, Craig
Sanitize just before you bottle. If you are going to wait for any period of time after running them through the dishwasher I would most definitely sanitize them just before you bottle. It is useless to sanitize bottles days or even hours before you bottle because that gives ample time for bacteria to get in the bottles and ruin the batch.
If you think you'll be storing that bottle beer for anylength of time then you should definately sanitize them.
I would recommend a sanititation step regardless.
Cool, thanks. I have tried to time it to where the bottles are dry just before bottling but it wouldn't be a hassle to go ahead and sanitize before bottling. Thanks for the heads up. Craig
I think it was Papazian who recomended using a lighter or my personal choice a torch (like for plumbing) to sanitize the bottle opening
(not the caps) just before placement in the bottles. When I bottle I pull my bottles out of a bleach bath, rinse with straight HOT tap water, drain, set aside for a few minutes, drain the remaining water that collects, then take the torch to the tops for just a moment each and fill with Gods nectar.
LOL as clumsy as I am, me playing with a blow-torch and a bunch of glass bottles full of alcohol could be a very bad thing.
Seriously though, I have put back a approximately 200 gallons this year (exact figures are NOT important for public forums
) all in bottles, and I have never felt the need to sanitize the lips of my already sanitary bottles.

I agree. No need to sanitize the lips of already sanitary bottles.

I don't think he was refering to bottling when he explained that. He was recommending that if you wanted to culture/propogate yeast in a beer bottle or any other vessel (flask, etc.), and when you poured the slurry out you needed a sanitary rim, so he reccomends using a torch.
