Better bottle blow-off?

Hello,

So I finally decided to go with the "Better Bottle" fermenter. Unfortunately I didn't think ahead too well. The only stopper I bought with it was a regular #10 drilled rubber stopper, which I think will be promptly blown off the top by the actively fermenting beer.

I know they make a large-bore closure that they say you can attach PVC tubing to and fashion some type of blow-off tube, but that certainly doesn't seem like the most elegant solution and I don't have the parts.

Has anyone come up with a good way to attach a blow-off tube to the better bottle?

Hi loeo,

I use Better-Bottles as well and cannot say enough good things about them, but I digress. I have ported o-ring closures on all six of them, along with the dry airlocks and 1/4" 90˚ barb fittings, and use them to facilitate oxygen free racking. The only problem I have with using them during a blow off is that the 1/2" OD tubing that will fit into the ported o-ring closure is only 3/8" ID. I was concerned that wouldn't be large enough to avoid getting plugged up. I saw on Better-Bottle's website, the ported o-ring closure that is drilled and tapped to accept a 3/4" fitting, but I have not found a vendor that carries it yet.

The next best thing that I found is this Better-Bottle Blow off Tube offered by Hearts Home brew. It is a specially drilled #10 stopper that accommodates 1/2" ID tubing. Not much larger I know, but after a dozen or so blow offs that I have had since I began using them, they have performed really well. Even this 1.090 OG Russian Imperial Stout that spewed out over a 1/2 gallon of blow off, and that was even after using foam control drops!

Why can't you just buy a solid stopper and drill a 1/2" hole in it?

Thanks for Reply!!

It is very difficult to drill those stoppers.
You can try just make sure you post your results.

Good Luck!!!
