Bottle Gaskets
Sorry if this has been posted before, but I didn't have time to peruse all of the threads.
Question: I just bought 60 resealable German beer bottles (ceramic tops) and am in the process of cleaning the crud out of each. These bottles have never been used for home brewing, so they've been used only once. Should I replace the rubber gaskets or will I be okay reusing? I've inspected most of them and none are dry or cracked.
They are fine, and you probably won't have to replace them for a while. Gives a great kapow when you open your carbed beer.
Thanks Guru! I'm a newbie with a Brewer's Best kit and have my first batch of Belgian Ale fermenting as we speak. And, as expected, the start-up cost hasn't been cheap, so saving $6-$7 on gaskets and such makes me happy!
Just give them a good cleaning and inspection. If they look fine then they probably are.
I just picked up a dozen 1 liter swing-top bottles off from Craigslist. I have never used this type of bottle before, and my question is, should I take the whole wire bail off the bottle and soak the ceramic top with the gasket is sanitizer? And then reinstall them after the bottles are filled? I am not sure how else to make sure the top is sanitized.
They also came with a Mr Beer. I'm thinking of doing smaller stovetop batches this winter, when it's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey outside. I'll have to look into how those Mr Beers work.
Ruralbrew.... ditch the mr beer and do all extract or a partial mash kit from your lhbs most will have at least some grains to steep and they can be done on the stovetop inside. So when the brass balls are rolling around outside you and your beer are warm and cozy inside.
Also I usually take the bail off the bottle and the rubber off the bail. Soak it all in the sanitizer and reassemble just before you bottle.

Irondavy - thanks for the tip on the bottles. I wasn't real sure how to proceed with them.
As far as the Mr Beer, I was thinking of using it as a 2 gallon fermenter, with either extract with steeped grain or partial mashes. Thought i could try some different styles or some experimentation. Figured I have it, might as well try fermenting in it.
the mr beer could also come in handy for making big starters for lagers. experimental 1/2 batches also an option
