Bottling bucket!!!
I have run into a problem with my bottling procedure and I can't quite figure out the answer.
The long and short of it is this...my last four batches (1) Phat Quail Ale (2) Columbus IPA (3) Hefeweizen (4) Alt, have hit a 50/50 survival rate.
The beers were all fine and primary, the beers were all fine when conditioned, but the Phat Quail and the Alt hit the skids in the bottle. Both of these beers ended up with a noticeable infection in which proteins and or yeast showed up clinging to the sides of the bottles.
I can't explain exactly what would possibly have gone wrong. I use oxy clean to cleanse the bottles and star-san to santize. I have looked at my notes and cannot find anything I have done differently. I have used the same bottling bucket, bottle filler and hoses for all four batches.
I am looking for some advice and or cleaning regiment that anyone else uses to flawlessly bottle up a beer. The Phat Quail was salvageable because it was dry hopped and managed to subdue to the nasties and I drank it quick. The Alt is just awful and sour. It tastes nothing like it did when I took the final reading before bottling.
Any suggestions welcome (other than kegging of course, it where I want to go, but I can't for a few months still).
As always thanks in advance.
Thanks
Andre
If the bottles don't seem to be the problem I would replace the bottling wand, hoses and anything associated with the beer transfer. You probably don't have to replace the bucket but everything else must go.
That would be my first step, unless the bottles are not getting clean. It sounds like they are though.
Thanks
Andy
It could be the bottling bucket and hoses. I had a problem where I had bottled a Belgain brew where I used Brett. The next few batches were over carbonated and foul. I changed buckets and hoses and every thing is fine now.
I also run my bottles though the dishwasher before bottling (no soap) the heat dry will kill anything that is left. Then I sanitize them.
Thanks
Asher
Could someone please tell me how long I shound sanitize a bottle with iso phor?
