carb tabs

anyone ever use those carb tabs i bought a pack to  try out  but when i was reading the pack turns out ill have to put around 6-8 in each 22 oz.  bottle
anyway i find that if i prime with sugar my beer is much sweeter than i intend it to be although i don't add oxygen to my wort  yet  ,but it usually taste more bitter before bottling. anyway to get around this? the only thing i can come up with is to hop more.

I've used them a few times when I was kegging and wanted to pull a few bottles without using priming sugar. They work alright but sometimes tend to leave little floaties in the beer, it doesn't seem to effect the taste. smile

My local shop jsut started carrying them, and I bought a package to try out.  Will be another week or so. I guess they'd be handy in that you can precisely control your priming. But some may have additives that you may or may not want in your beer.

Usually I prime by dissolving corn sugar in boiling water, letting in cool and then adding it to the beer in the bottling bucket. That way it's mixed uniformly. And regarding the floaties, i've had them happen as well with sugar, and also using DME to prime at it starts a 'mini-kraeuzen' in each bottle. There'll also be floaties from the yeast if you're not careful while pouring.

What kind of sugar are you using to prime when you notice the added sweetness? Some ferment more than others, which might lead to that...just a thought.

I still have a bag of carb tabs... hate the things.  Disolving your sugar into a little boiling water and racking your beer onto it in the bottling bucket is less time consuming than dropping those little boogers into each bottle.  And I know it's probably dumb of me but I worry about bacteria on the carb tabs... no real way to sanitize them.

I have used the Coopers carb drops a few times and they worked great. I used them mostly when I wanted a few 12 oz. bottles out of a batch but wanted the rest to go in a TAD bottle. No off flavors, no floaties, nice solid head and good carbonation. I keep them around now just in case I want to pull a few bottles out of a batch.
Coopers are about the size of a cough drop so the process is pretty easy. I would suspect the really small tabs I have seen out there ( the ones that require two or three per bottle) would be a real pain.

P.S....Jen

As much beer as you make, I could see where dropping the tabs in bottles would be an issue...ha! Looks like you need an assembly line to keep up with all that production!
Does the hubby help or is he just the official taste tester?

Nope, he doesnt help other than lugging heavy stuff or building things I want built, LOL.  He just indulges me and sits at the table chit chatting when I brew.  I have a grand scheme on a 4 year plan to open a brewery... not a micro brewery because those are too big for me, (LOL I call it a Nano-brewery), but I think I have a pretty good business plan and I know it will work.

WOW! Let us all know when the Nano is open for business.

4 year plan.

This is the land of opportunity for pete's sake.  I believe that even though we have bogged down what ever effectiveness we had with miles and miles of red tape that the wheels will still turn.  So, I am building my business.  I refuse to take out a loan to start it, and I refuse to believe that I can't do what I want to do within the guidelines of the law.  I honestly think that hard work and planning can accomplish almost any goal.

Wow, got a little lectur-ey there didn't I?  Sorry about that.  LOL can we tell I feel strongly about this?
