First Time Using 5-Star Star San
That is a good idea thank you.
As far as I am aware, One-Step is classified as a cleaner, not a sanitizer. I used One-Step for a long time, as was advised by my local homebrew shop, and suffered contamination after contamination. After doing a bit of research, I learned that One-Step is not an FDA certified sanitizer, and it's manufacturer does not list it as a sanitizing agent. If you read the label, it says nothing anywhere about sanitizing, only cleaning. I read claims that with extended exposure times, some level of sanitization is possible.
From everything I read, which was a lot, the highest regarded cleaner was PBW, and the highest regarded sanitizer was Star-San - and those were NOT figures provided by 5 star chemicals. I read it in books, on retailers' web sites, and a plethra of brewing forums.
And, Star San breaks down into yeast nutrient. How cool is that?
i use five star PBW. I didnt see it before when i bought it. but its a clearner and not a sanitizer. i didnt rinse my equipment when i used it thinking it was a sanitizer. Is my stuff going to be okay. or is it a lost cause. I hope not becuase i paid like 60 dollars for the kit. Im freaking out a bit. Its in a secondary right now i rinsed it with super hot water and the five star cleaner. Any information would be great if it is infected what should i smell?
Thank again for any help.

Doesnt mean its infected but you have a real good chance of having a soapy beer. Luckily it is diluted quite a bit now but I anticipate you having head retention issues and a funny off flavor. I dont know if i would dump it just yet, though. You might as well see how it comes out and next time youre using chemicals especially something you have never used make sure to read the directions.
my fellow brewer just purchased the five star star san solution and when he was brewing his beer he mixed a 1/2 ounce with 2.5 gallon of water, sterilized the necessary items and then without removing the water and solution added the remaining wert. I told him that he should have replaced the water with star san but he insisted that it would be alright. My question is, will the beer be safe to drink if and even if it will turn out because of this? if anyone has any incite to this please let me know. thanks fellow brewers
As it's been said, "don't fear the foam." I've racked hundreds of batches on top of a (granted, minimized) cake of foam with no detrimental results in the beer. As I understand it, if you eat chicken, you are eating star san. Major chicken manufacturers throughout the country (minus organic local boys) use it as a sanitizing solution in their manufacturing process - Without rinse. So if your concern is about your health, your chicken is to be of concern as well as your beer. I have no credible reference for this, but it's my understanding.
According to 5 star, star san and it's foam turn into essentially yeast nutrient once diluted into gallons of wort.
I still try to minimize the amount of foam I rack on to, but if it stops running freely after sitting - It's going in my beer.
If you're really concerned about it, 5 star also makes "sani clean" which is the same product, minus star san's foaming characteristic. It's great for carboys and kegs.

Are you trying to say the wort was racked directly into the 2.5 gallons of star-san solution? Its unclear to me what you mean, because you say "replaced the water with star-san solution".
If he put 2.5 gallons of star san mix in a 5 gallon batch of beer it will make him gag and want to throw up. Luckily I think it will be so undrinkable he probably wont be able to get enough down to harm himself (much.)
I typically run starsan through my tap lines and have been pouring it out into a plastic cup along with the first bit of beer. Then I will usually fill another cup with the first pint of the brew and sample it. Needless to say on one of my less observant evenings I sampled the wrong cup and well...I managed not to puke, but I sure wanted too.

yeah the wort was racked directly into the 2.5 gallons of star san solution. after 24 hours fermentation is very minimal so i think that it killed the yeast.
