Kegging

I just recieved a kegging system from my father.corny kegs co2 and lines. my question is everything was used to dispense soda for years. can i use everything if it is cleaned properly? and what should i use to clean it? thank you for any help you can give me.

i'd use some PBW (powdered brewery wash)

Yep, but you'll really need to clean them, probably even let them soak for a bit depending on which sodas the kegs contained.  It would probably be best to actually recondition them, meaning you'll want to clean the hell out of them (including taking all the posts out) and replace all the plastic rings (I think there is usually 5 total).

DT

I'd prolly replace the hoses if they are plastic "fish tank" type hoses.  My experience with those in my years as a aquarium hobbiest are that they tend to get old and brittle, then harbor bacteria.

Get yourself some corny rebuild kits and replace every rubber seal, seriously.  Then clean the hell out of everything stainless and make sure you sanitize before every use.  Also I would highly recommend getting a small brush long enough to scrub the inside of the dispensing tube. Replace all beer dispensing lines, it's cheap.  AND congrats on your new brewery equipment!!

Cheers!

hey here's a quick question, i haven't but, can you mix PBW and star san?

Definately replaced all the hoses and rubber parts (o rings).  Disassemble the popets and valve and soak it all in warm PBW.

As for the kegs themselves.  Make 5 gallons of PBW in realtively hot water, ~80-90 degrees.  Put that in the keg an let it soak overnight.  You can reheat this and transefer to another keg if you want to save on PBW cost.
If the keg still smells like soda, repeat with fresh PBW.

BrewLuva:
Are you thinking about making a one stop solution of cleanser and starsan?  I think that the PBW solution ends up being somewhat basic, while the StarSan works as an acidic solution (pH 5ish???)
So mixing them together will likely reduce the effectiveness of one or both solutions.

thank you for your help. i have done what you said and have a batch carbonating as we speak thanks
