kegging from a keg

Some friends of mine purchased a 15 gallon keg for a party this weekend.  When it was over, it was still about half full.  The style keg they had used had a hand pump on it.  This uses just outside air, and in my experience, the beer does not keep very long in this type of keg.  You need to use the beer right away.  Well, in an effort to try to preserve it a little longer, I filled up a corny keg, and put the gas on it.  How long do you suppose it will keep in this state?  If I don't tap it at all, will it still be good in one week?  Does anyone have any experience with this?

My guess is it won't last long but longer than if you had let it sit in the Sanke.  It was exposed to air in the 1/2 barrel keg and then transferring to your corny, so it's going to get that cardboardy oxidized taste eventually.   You probably slowed it down though.

 

I tend to agree that it won't last too long, but I think you will be ok for a week or so.  Also, I don't think it will matter much if you tap it or not, as you will be replacing whatever liquid you remove with CO2.  This shouldn't change the rate of oxidation that occurs.

 

The other obvious question I forgot to ask is, "What type of beer is it?"  If its BMC, nothing's going to save it anyway.

We used to just fill pitchers and put them in the fridge.  Keystone Light tastes the same no matter how old it is.

Depends on how you transfer from the sankey to corny.  If you had put CO2 on the sankey to push the brew to the corny via a hose connected to the liquid side of the corny, then I think it'll hold up for a couple of weeks.  If you racked it over using the hand pump; it won't last as long. 
All the comments are good.  Keep oxygen/air to a minimum and sealed in, if possible.  I'll "saved" a Spaten Pils in a corny for 4 weeks....gone before it went bad.  I pushed with C02 as described above.

Another question for you experts related to kegging.  I've only brewed one batch, and bottled it, and I'm trying to convince my wife that I should invest in the kegging equipment.  She's concerned that the beer won't last as long in the keg as it would in the bottle (since we can't drink 5-gal of beer that quick).

So...how long does homebrew last in a corny?

 

The two kegs I have inthe kegerator now were hooked up on 10/1 and 9/28.  Taste every bit as good now as they did then.   The biggest risk is overcarbonation.  You can let it carbonate and then turn the gas way down to just push the beer,  I've had kegs last 2 months with no problem.

 

The beer is an amber by Coastal Fog.  I kegged 2 - 5 gallon cornies.  One was drank over the first 2 days.  Tasted fine the first day, started to get just a little bit skunky the 2nd day.  Haven't touched the second keg.  We will be tapping it tomorrow, so I will report back the result.  Thank you so much for all the good advice.
As for using CO2 with the big keg from the store, how would I hook that up?  This keg only has an outlet fitted for the hand pump.
