Label application
I really don't plan on using labels very often but we have a party coming up this summer and plan on brewing at least 6 different beers. This is a special occasion and we want to put labels on them with unique names.
I don't want to use anything that will be hard to get off. I already took labels off most of them already! Does anyone know of a label that uses water to activate an adhesive (similar to a stamp)? I think that would be easy to remove.
Any advice on this you think would be helpful will be most appriciated!
I've seen labels that are supposed to be reusable. Haven't tried them on a beer bottle, but you could look into those. I think they are made by Avery.
Avery removable labels are not easy to remove from beer bottles. I guess they must be easy to remove from a cardboard box.
I've heard (but never tried) that milk makes a good adhesive that comes right off in water. You might try that - like test a few bottles with it and see if it works.
Good luck!
This thread gave me an idea for creating dry erase labels. Looks like I'v ebeen beat to that idea though:

You might try something like that. I wonder how the labels would hold up during cleaning time.
Ok. I’ve done a little internet research and I’ve found the following:
If you are, like me, just looking for a fun way to label your homebrew but want something very very easy to remove, you will probably be best off using regular paper as follows:
• Print your label on regular printer paper using a laser printer (ink jet printer ink will run as soon as you wet it)
• Cut to size
• Paint with a thin layer of milk and apply to bottle. Yep, strange but true. It holds very well too! (I’ve tried it) And it comes of easily in water when you are done.
Obviously this will not hold up well when you want to use a cooler, but it’s perfect for a fridge.
To design a label you can use a free template website. They only allow minimal creativity but give the devil his due, they are pretty neat and if you’re not trying to win a label contest, they may be just what you want.
Try these:
Beer Labelizer – has a fun assortment of 8 labels. Each label has 3 choices of colors.

Coopers – 6 basic labels but more ability to change colors.

Give them a try – they are good if you are like me and not an artist. Plus, I’m going to take them off in short order so don’t want to spend a lot of time making, applying, taking off. (Hey! I have a life ya know!)
Now some of you are much more advanced in both brewing and artistic ability than I am! You can use one of a bazillion art programs. Just Google “image manipulation” and you will have more choices than you can imagine. And of course, you can use photoshop and gimp etc.
You can then print on paper and use the milk technique or use a more permanent label you can buy from the office supply store.
If you are really serious about your label, you can have them custom made. Google “custom bottle labels” and you will have choices from printers who will print them for you to systems you can buy for your home. But, my friends, these are not cheap.
glue sticks work well for paper labels too
I design my labels in word. Start with an Avery-style label template, depending on how big you want your labels to be, and go from there. I make liberal use of tables to sort graphics and information. I am no graphic designer, but word is really easy to use for this purpose. Word art FTW!
