Muntons Kreamy X priming sugar w/ heading agent

I just ordered a dry irish stout extract kit from NB. I want it resemble Guiness with a creamy head and lacing so I ordered Muntons Kreamy X priming sugar.

http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewing/c … egory/221/

It contains DME, dextrose, and a heading agent. I was wondering if anyone else has used this product and if they got desirable results? I have searched the 'net for information and I am not getting much feedback. I am using this to bottle, not keg.

If you have used it, the package is for 5 imperial gallons, how much did you use for 5 american gallons?

Never used it. I love guiness too. I thought I read that the reason for the creamy head and the way it forms when it's poured is because they use Nitrogen instead of CO2 to carbonate it. I might be wrong though. interested in hearing if it works to your satisfaction.

DC is right about how the head forms in Guiness.  You can only get that with the nitrogen pour system.

CreamyX supposedly increased head retention though.

A buddy of mine did a little side by side with it a while ago.
You can check it out at my site Brew-Dudes-CreamyX.

Yeah, I am familiar with the nitrogen dispensing of Guiness. I was just trying to represent the head and lacing as well as possible with a bottle conditioned ale. Brewchez, thanks for those test results. I think I will go ahead and use it to at least get a fuller head which is what I desire. I am a bit leary of the propylene glycol alginate, but I am sure I have consumed plenty of it before. With some research it seems it is present in everything from ice cream to candy to salad dressings as a thickener.

I wonder how long till you can buy nitrogen widgets from Northern Brewer (like inside Guiness draught cans and bottles)?

Technically, could I scavenge a good number of widgets and put them in the bottles and then counterpressure bottle fill using nitrogen instead of Co2? This is just hypothetical, but would that work?!

Hey, thats a cool idea.  I wonder if someday that will be a reality.

I don't think you can just counterpressure with N2 and a widget.  I don't exactly know how the widget works but I think it has the N2 in it and the cracking of the can releases the pressure in the widget somehow.  Maybe I am wrong.

Still a cool thought though.

I have been cheating and throwing in a half pound of oatmeal in a lot of my brews recently for head retention and mouth feel.   Of course, Brewchez's buddy did such a nice job with that experiment, now I'll have to do one of each and see what the difference is.  Darn it!  More brewing!  Don't you just hate that?

Crabnut, this is an extract batch I am brewing. When/where would I add the oatmeal? I have used it before in partial mashes but this is strictly an extract with some special grains. Should I steep it with the special grains? Also, can you use grocery store oatmeal like some good steel cut oats or something? My lhbs doesn't stock any kind of oatmeal in the brewing section.

Flaked barley helps give a creamy head - not sure how or when you'd use it to an extract kit. Can you get bottle conditioned guinness still - I can't over here in GB - but when I could, the yeast starter I made and used enhanced the beer I made.

Good luck anyhow

I think the widgets aren't pure nitrogen they may be nitrogen and co2 mixed.when I had a co2 tank I asked the local weld supply that fills tanks how much a tank of nitrogen would be. new tank filled with nitrogen was going to be over 50 bucks. not worth it IMO.

Sorry.  I do straight all-grain.  You can usually get flaked oats in the LHBS, but can also use the straight up oatmeal from the box, as long as it's not the quick oats.  Don't know what the impact would be if just steeped.
