Rusting bottle caps
I bought a package of 100 oxygen barrier caps, when I went to use them I sanitized all of them. I only used 52 of
them so I put the rest back in the bag and thought nothing of it. Well next time I bottled they were rusty ,so I had
to buy more. I did not have any idea they would rust. So, if you buy caps in bulk , only sanitize what you need. Any
one else have this happen? I guess I could have used a blow dryer on them.
CHEERS!!!
I only sanitize the caps I need and toss out any extras as to not let any moisture in the bag of caps.
FYI, all of the oxygen barrier caps I've used instruct you to not sanitize them because they're activated when they come in contact with moisture.
I did not know that. I buy them by the 10,000 so they didn't include any instructions. I'll remember that.
CHEERS!!!! Kenny
Yup, I'll second FPB. don't sanitize the oxy barrier caps. They water activates them.

When I get done bottling I have all my bottles capped and out. When I transfer them to a box / crate / bin I just turn the bottle upside down for a sec to activate the oxygen barrier and to make sure there are no leaks. There isn't going to be any bacteria unless you have your caps sitting out. Even if there was the alcohol in the beer would kill most any bacteria that would be on the caps. Just make sure you keep them sealed before use and it won't be a problem and upside down for a sec before storage.
