Scented dish soap used to rinse bottles




Hey, everyone - first time brewer here.  I've been checking this forum to get tips and to make sure I had everything sorted before starting my very first batch, and between that and the advice of a few friends with a lot of brewing experience, I pretty much think I got everything right.

The one thing I'm concerned with is that before I started reading posts here, I had gotten into the habit of rinsing my used bottles as soon as I was done with them with water and a few drops of scented dishsoap.  Since then, I've read plenty about using unscented detergent so as not to leave residues that might cause off flavors, etc...

Are these bottles useless now? This first batch has been already been in the primary right now for 4 days, and I'm not going to be drinking 8 sixers in the next 10 days, so I'm curious if I should just eat it and get bottles at the home brew store or will another rinse and a run through the dishwasher take care of any potential problems?

Rinse them with the hottest water you can get out of the tap.  If you can smell the scent keep going.  A soak in warm baking soda solution would also work.... or reclean them with traditional brewing cleanser like PBW.



 

If you've got one, dishwasher on the hot cycle, no soap.

No rinse aid either.

 

I do have a dishwasher, so I guess I'll just rinse again and then run them through with no detergent or rinse aid.

You really never want to use any dish soap when washing your bottles, because unless you rinse the crap out of them the residue (even with unscented) will kill you head, or give you verry little head.  When you rinse used bottles that you've just pollished off just super hot tap water will be fine, then do another hot tap rinse right before you bottle and soak in an iodopher solution and you'll be fine.  I made the mistake of using a dish soap to wash with my first batch and even after thourough rinsing the head was minimal.  I won't even use dish soap in my carboy's.

No soap!  If you have to use some solution do like brewchez mentioned and use a brew clenser like PBW.  The baking soda solution sounds like it would work too.

sewer_urchen - turned out there's plenty of head after all!  Guess I got lucky - after soaking to remove the labels, I used super hot water to rinse them out and then ran the disinfect cycle...everything turned out beautifully.  big_smile  I suppose it could've been b/c I only used like a drop or two of soap when I did that.

 

That's good, I'm glad it worked out for you.  I did once bottle some cider that I had washed the bottles with a tid bit of soap, and made a sparkling that worked out ok, cider doesn't keep it's head like beer anyway, it's more like champaigne...but if I recal I did a really thorough rince.  I find now a good bottle brush and some really hot water are pretty much enough, the soap doesn't really kill any of the germs, that's what the sanatizer is for, the soap just helps break up residue that germs can hide in, and if you use a good bottle brush and hot water that makes pretty much the same effect.

Either way I'm glad you didn't have a batch of good beer that didn't hold it's head!  Cheers MGP!

 

pee in the bottles. they'll smell even worse, so the scented dish soap smell won't seem so bad next time. that said, for some reason nobody likes my home-brews!
