sealing wax
What I'm hearing about screw on caps is you want to stay away from them.
You can't trust the seal.
I was wondering if you used a sealing wax like some wine companies do on their wine bottles if that would help with the screw on caps.
The half gallon growlers I've seen on the net are all screw on, so would it help to use sealing wax like on a wine bottle?
Marv.
The inner rubber seal on a screw on cap is intended for one use, unless the wax you applied was completely airtight I don't think it would help.
yeah that makes since, it would look good though.
Marv.
I think it would be cool too, a lot of breweries are doing that for their seasonal special releases now.
It would probably be a pain in the behind to pick off if you planed to use those bottles agin.
Marv.
No it usually comes off in one piece. It's a rubbery type of wax, not like candle wax.
The best way to find out would be to try it.
I think it would look quite cool and professional.
I would stay away from screw caps. To big of a risk to take in my opinion. It would be a shame to have a whole batch of bad beer due to having screwcaps. You can get big growler size bottles with fliptops. That might be something to look into. Stone Brewing Co. has them. They are kind of cool looking.
If you put wax on it then would you need any cap at all?

There's no way the wax could seal and be pressure tight, it's too brittle.
For decoration of wine bottles, I've bought soft plastic sleeves in the past that you put over the end and heat up.
It's been a while, but I think I used a match to make the plastic shrink.
I guess using bottle sealing wax creates a unique appearance. Sold in 1lb. packages. 1lb of wax will coat approximately 65 bottles. Do you think it's more affordable and profitable?
Profitable? As compared to what?
I think it would be a nice touch when giving a home brew as a gift, but it's not technically necessary, is it?
