Swing cap bottle
I picked up three swing cap bottles, each one litre in size, and upright rectangular shaped. Bought them at Ross for $1.99 each.
My question is about the manufacturer. Bormioli Rocco. Does anyone know if these bottles could withstand pressure for hard (sparkling) apple cider, and beer bottling.
I don't want to end up with bottle bombs.
I have had 3.5 vols of Belgian tripel many times in grolsch bottles and some Italian olive oil sainthood my old boss gave me he brought home from Italy. I never had any issues.
I looked up the product on the company's website but it didn't provide any relevant information. You could contact them but I'm pretty sure they'll tell you the company does not recommend it for liability reasons.
If you have a big rubber tote or a pot with a lid big enough to put one of them in, you could fill one with your brew and place it in there and put something heavy on the lid and see if it holds up. if it breaks, at least it'll stay in the pot.
I have some bottles from the same manufacturer that the mother-in-law picked up for me at Marshalls.I have what looks like a regular wine bottle with a swing top closing. I put a sparkling hard cider that was carbonated to champagne levels. The cider actually bombed one 12oz beer bottle before I had the chance to throw them all in the fridge. So I would have to say they are safe for whatever you are doing with them, they are at the least stronger than a Sam Adams 12 oz bottle (which is what bombed on me).
