Where to buy beer bottles?

Just put the word out among your beer drinking friends that you are looking for non-twist off bottles for your homebrew.  I've found that this will give your friends justification to their significant others to buy a better class of commercial beers, and you reap the benefits.  A returned six-pack of full bottles never hurts the contribution either, I've found.

If you live anywhere near a college campus, finding a ton of bottles is easy.  Just go hang out near the loudest dorms you can find, saturdays are usually the best.  Hit up the kids for their sack full of emptys.  This is even more efficient if the college has a recycling bin.  If you know when homecoming is it's no problem to snag 100+ bottles in a day.   Think how much more equipment you can get if you don't need to pay for all those bottles big_smile

If you're in a pinch, check your local homebrew supply store. Mine carries both 12- and 22-ounce bottles. Plus they come in a cardboard case for easy carrying and storage. Over time you can supplement your initial supply with freebies you collect. I've done that to add a case or two more of empties.

most homebrew supply stores sell bottles.  i think it's more fun to buy bottles that are full of beer and then drink the beer though.  most any brown glass bottles THAT AREN'T TWIST-OFFS will do.  i have found that, with my capper, i get a better seal with american beer bottles (sam adams works great) than i do with european beers.

I agree, empty the bottles yourself.  My antique bench capper has no problems with European or any other bottles.  Twist offs are right out.

As I posted in another post... I've gone to my local Beer Depot and asked for empty case returns.... a little cleanning and saved me a sh*t load of money.... Bought a case of 24 for $2.... can't go wrong.... TheJet

I was thumbing through the old posts since I am new here and thought I might toss in my thoughts.

What worked well for my was hitting up the local recycling center and asking the guy at the desk if he minds me grabbing a few bottles since I am starting to homebrew. He said sure and now I have 100+ bottles free f charge. Getting the labels off was kind of a war story, but cleaned, 'dishwashered' and sanatied bottles for free are always a good thing (if your wife doesn't mind the mess for a few days that is!)

I do the same thing as Jet. I go to my local beer supplier and buy some returned bottles from them. I pay a nickle a bottle. I went last week and payed $5 for 3 cases of 16oz bottles(Genny Light) and a 1 case of swing tops. The nice thing about the Genny bottles is that they come in a heavy case for storage. I also get the cardboard 6 pack holders from them to give beer away to freinds.

Take a look at this site:    www.beerathome.com

Also, you could buy Grolsch beer and use the flip top bottles which look SO COOL! For me, It is cheaper to buy the beer and use the bottles than just buying the flip top bottles (IF you like those kinds of bottles). the bottles run like two dollars each, but a four pack of Grolsch is eight dollars...a no brainer!  If ya don't like the beer, pour it in your garden or lawn. Beer is just so darn useful!

I MOSTLY use the amber 12 ounce bottles with the Oxygen absorbing caps. I don't know how well those caps  work, but I THINK they help.

Good luck,

www.Williamsbrewing.com sells a wide assortment of bottles, give em a try!
