bubbler / air lock
hi again everyone.
see the airlock do you remove the cap from the top of it and is it water i half fill it with or the cider im using?
thanks.
You can keep or remove the cap if you want. I usually toss the caps on the S-shaped airlocks but keep the caps on the 3 piece ones. You can fill it with water, sanitizer or vodka. I've used all 3 and I don't think it really makes a difference.
So if i leave the cap on there isnt a chance of the thing exploding due to pressure or anything?
Im a first timer so i dont know mutch about things like this.
Cheers.
There's a chance of the airlock getting plugged even with the cap off. the bottom of the airlock usually flares inward with openings shaped like an X. The 3 piece airlocks I cut the X out so the opening is nice and wide.
You should have some tubing on hand to use as a blowoff tube in case you get an agressive fermentation. I've had foam come right through the top of the airlock before.

The cap on the 3 piece ones are vented to relieve the pressure, but the bottom can still get plugged.
the one i have is like 3 bubbles on each side in the shape of an s bend?
it does taper in at the bottem but theres no X do i cut it? and at the end its got a red cap so i just remove that and put a piece of tubing on that yeah??
Really appriciate this guys.

Just to not confuse people, not all 3 piece airlocks have that wierd X thing at the base. Most of the ones I have are just straight and open at the base. I have a couple that have this X thing at the base and it does make sense to cut it off.
For the original poster: It doesn't sound like to have this issue so you don't need to do any cutting.

No.
It sounds like you have an S shaped airlock. Just fill it with water so that the water comes up half way on the second bubbles on each side. That should be enough water. There is no need for tubing per se.
You may get a blow off, but being a newbie I doubt it, so just fill it with water and off you go.
