chlorine in tap water
The packet of yeast I used has instructions on it to dilute in 1/4 cup of 105 degree water first. I put it in a bowl and added less than 1/4 cup of hot tap water. I know the city water is treated with chlorine but didn't think of it until I had already dumped it in. Did I ruin it?! Will that little bit of chlorine kill the bacteria needed? Also I used a plastic funnel to pour the watery yeast in with. Will not having sanitized the funnel ruin it? I'm doing only a gallon, but I split it up into two glass jars, only a half gallon in each. So seeing how small the amount is maybe the chlorine or unsanitized funnel will have an effect. Sorry so wordy.
I don't think you have an issue, unless the temp of the tap water was too high. 105 isn't very hot. I would have sanitized the funnel, though.
I agree with Brewski. The unsanitized funnel might be a problem, but you're probably ok. And the little bit of chlorine in little bit of tap water you used shouldn't produce much if anything in the way of off flavors. I've done the same thing with the tap water for dry yeast before, and I didn't notice anything off with the beer.
For sanitizing I use tap water. For anything going into the carboy and wort I use bottled water. Always sanitize the funnel. If your beer turns out bad, that is most likely the cause. Before adding the yeast anything and everything touching the beer needs to be sanitary.
If it goes bad, just dump it and start over. My first full year in brewing I had one out of probably 6 or 7 batches of beer turn out good. the rest were sour. I figured out the problem was I was trying to sanitize using bleach but with bleach you need to rinse things off and I was just recontaminating everything. Finally switched to Iodophor and rarely have a batch go bad.
I even use vodka in the airlock to avoid any possibility of contamination through the airlock.

Thank you guys so much. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
