Drinking With Daren
There is a TV show on the public access channel here in Portland called "Drinking With Daren." It's a very well done show. The few episodes I have seen involve them visiting places where various types of hooch are made. In one they visited a local maker of pear brandy, showing us his facility and processes.
Last night they visited "Hair of The Dog." It was very interesting to see the brewery's low-if set up. Bremaster Alan Sprints happened to be brewing his hopless (oh the humanity!!!) Greg that day, which consists of quite a bit of squash.
Sprints said that he has no intention of expanding the brewery, even though they are at capacity. He said that some of the brewery's current beers may become seasonals because he can't make enough of each to keep them all in regular production. In fact, he had to stop making Ruth last year when it came time to make Doggie Claws.
Sprints did say that he really wants to open a pub.
He typically does about three mashes a day on his small system. The first mash is a 30 minute one, because he wants to get it into the kettle fast. The subsequent mashes will go longer simply because he needs to wait for the first boil to finish.
The brewery has no "test system." Sprints said that he has a 10 gallon home brew set up at home, but generally the breweries main brewsystem is his test kitchen. He likes to know how the beers will work on his system anyway. Plus, he doesn't really have the capacity to introduce new beers so he's not too concerned about it.
When asked whether he is now in the position he dreamed he would be in when he started the brewery 15 years ago, Sprints said that honestly he thought that the brewery would be much bigger. He added that he enjoys making beer more than managing people, so he is actually happy with things the way they turned out.
Thanks

Watched another episode last week where he visited a brew pub in Vancouver. Salmon Creek, I think it was. It's interesting because Daren doesn't know anything about how beer is made -- he just likes to drink it. So, he asks a lot of baisc questions, which often elicit some really interesting information.
It's also funny seeing him get wasted, often ending up with his shirt off screaming into the camera. I don't know what it is, but the guy cracks me up and informs me at the same time.
Thanks
Bobby
I like Beer Nuts but I am starting to get a little irritated with the hosts of the show. Total duds on camera and half the time it seems like they don't even know what beer is. Right after beer nuts is a show called Three Sheets (maybe it is on before) that is awesome. Sounds more like Drinking with Daren. Some comedian named Zane Lamprey travels all over the world and each episode is based in a certain area, and he hangs with the locals and gets smashed and learns their drinking culture. Last week he was in Ireland drinking Guinness and Irish whiskey. Not devoted to beer only, but you can't watch an episode and not want to start drinking.
Thanks
Conor
I haven't seen these shows but they remind me of The Man Show, when the hosts introduce the bandleader/musician and he chugs a draft and puts the empty mug upside down on his head.
(Is there any other way?)
