fermenting query

howdy,
i've recently started my 2nd cider brew.  ive brewed many beers before, but am reletively new to ciders.  the lid to my fermenter used to have a hole in it which ive covered thoroughly with tape.  It has never been a problem for me with my beer brews.  my problem is that its been about a week since i started it and added the cider yeast, but their is no gas bubbling from the airlock.  it is 'frothy' inside the fermenter, so im assuming that it must be leaking from the taped up hole.  i'm sure its coming along nicely, but i would rest easier if anyone had a little nifty trick for me to clarify for certain that it is fermenting along nicely.  i do not currently have a hydrometer, so if there were another way to check than measuring specific gravity.
cheers all, any help would be much appreciated

ps.  oh yeah, i cant manage to keep the temp above about 16 degrees Celcius at the moment cos its too bloody cold here and dont have my old heater.  have done fine in these conditions with beer before, but does cider yeast need a higher temp to work?

pps. im in not-so-sunny New Zealand

Where are you located that its that cold?

I'll look into this to see if I can't find an answer for you...

I'm currently in the process of researching cider for myself and I thought that I read somewhere that you want cider to brew longer at lower temps for better results.  This was music to my ears as I'm pretty cheap and keep my heat low in the house.  It is strange that you're not outgassing.  Definitely seems counter to my limited experience with beer brewing (4-5 batches several years back) even with your taped hole.
