Quick Question about Cider
Firstly i want to make it clear i've never brewed before, and i am about as ameteur as could be.
I am thinking about brewing a small ammount of cider (2.5 litres or so) just for abit of a project to keep me busy in (what little!) spare time i have.
I've read a few articles, such as this (http://www.mit.edu/~dfm/brew.html) and think i am up to the challenge (however small that challenge may seem.)
The first question i wanted to ask, was wether i could brew about 2.5 litres (a little over a 6 packs worth) in 2 plastic cola bottles fitted with a rubber cork with airlock in it?
Would there be too little in each bottle for the brew to work?
I have a 2.25 litre bottle and a 1.25 litre bottle, so i would brew 1.6litres in the 2.25 litre bottle and .9 of a litre in the 1.25 litre bottle. Is this too small a quantity to brew? can you old hands see any great (or small) errors in my plans?
I brewed cider in two 4L bottles years ago and it was great. i'm doing 2x2.4L bottles now using airlock in the top and about 300g suger in each, it seems to be going fine.
Thanks Brett,
Thats great to hear. Was, and i suppose, is, your method much like the one i posted?
Just wondering about the sugar you added, was that for boosting the abv (i think thats the correct abbreviation), or am i on the wrong track?
Also, if i were to use champagne yeast, how large or small a gap should i leave at the top for possible krausen, is this even an issue with these sorts of yeasts.
Thanks.
