A bit of advice for stir bars- get a few. You are bound to drop one into your fermenter eventually, and need to wait til it is done before you can fish it out. I use a seperate magnet to hold it still while I pitch, but every once in awhile, it some how happens.
I keep another magnet around just for the purpose of retrieving the dropped stirbar. It pulls it right up the side of the fermentor.
Especially, if you purchase a 3 inch stir bar. Makes pulling out smaller bars much easier.

get the barbell style if you can, they seem to spin the best. If you are using something other then a flask, then the bottom me be convex, the barbells hold nicely.
I understand your advice accept the part about where to get barbell types. (FYI - Great pictures and I don't blame you for enjoying that.) Looking around the web, I did find one scientific site selling them in packs of 10, starting at $80 plus shipping. Ouch. Any other sites you could suggest? Short of getting the barbell type, will 1" be sufficient even for big multi-gal starters?

That is where I got mine, we did a group buy on another board, and 5 of us all bought 2 each, I bought them then shipped them to the other members and we all split the charges.
The size can actually be tricky, the stirplate magnet size is what matters, they are supposed to be somewhat matched up, maybe our lab tech brewchez can offer some advice, I dont know what they are supposed to be, I just know mine work with my magmix.
