Stir Plate for sale??
Probably not, but I figured if anyone out there was looking to get rid of one, I'd ask. I saw a real old looking one on ebay yesterday that went for like $30.
Thanks
You could make one for $30. Everything you'd need I'm sure you have laying around the house and whatever you can't find you can get at Radio Shack. I recently built one similar to brewchez's stir plate. It's not that hard; easily an afternoon project. Check out his stir plate thread here.. http://www.brewingkb.com/equipment/Buil … -2597.html
Not sure if I'm ambitious enough for that. I see one for sale on ebay that someone built from a cigar box. Not too expensive, interesting look eh? Wonder if it works... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi … Y.m238.lVI
Before I decided to build a stir plate I was looking around at buying one. I checked out a lot of used lab equipment websites. I think the cheapest price I found was $50. I remember a few of the sites having guarantees that the equipment was tested and guaranteed for X amount of days. I'll surf around and see if I can find them again. If I can, I'll post the links for ya.

the first few pages are bids.. once you get to pages 4 or 5 its more "buy it now" kind of stuff
Man, there are tons for sale there. Some not as pretty as others, but if it spins, who cares?
Thanks!
Nice link FPB......I was thinking of building one myself, but maybe I'll just buy it......
OK here's a couple more sites that I remember looking at.
Labequip was another site I checked out. They don't list prices but you can request quotes. First link is for stirrers. The second one is for fridges of all kinds: general purpose, temperature control, explosion proof, etc.

Dredging up an old thread here guys. Building a couple of my own stir plates (an old dead computer with two hard drives and several cooling fans) and was wanting some info. As it stands, I can scrounge everything except for the speed controls and stir bars. Speed controls are easy from Radio Shack, but I have no idea on the stir bars. My LHBS does not carry stir bars? They are a really good shop normally. What's with that?
Not sure what speed one would normally use. If the speed isn't a big deal, then why use a speed control at all. On the other hand, seems like every stir plate I have seen on the web has a speed control. Thoughts?
F
I ordered my stir bars from More Beer but there's plenty of places you can find them online.
You'll need some sort of speed control (rheostat, etc) because you need to start off slow and then increase your speed for the stir bar to stay aligned with the magnet. If it started at full speed it would just kick it off to the side.
A bit of advice for stir bars- get a few. You are bound to drop one into your fermenter eventually, and need to wait til it is done before you can fish it out. I use a seperate magnet to hold it still while I pitch, but every once in awhile, it some how happens.
The other bit of advice is to get the barbell style if you can, they seem to spin the best. If you are using something other then a flask, then the bottom me be convex, the barbells hold nicely.

I was going to buy a new 4 or 5L flask because my wimpy 1L isn't cutting it for my big beers. Now that I've acquired some Carlo & Rossi 1 gallon jugs I think I'm going to use those for starters but do you know if those barbell stir bars work in those vessels?

Yup, I love playing with my toys!![]()

Just FYI, I can't believe what a difference a stirplate makes. I used to poo poo these when I first started brewing, this was just when I was all about making beer my friends liked. Now i'm totally obsessed with Yeast, and how to make it do what I want it to do.
You will notice faster fementation times with the stir plate, and not just a little faster, like twice as fast or better. Also you can get the desired flavors, and aroma profiles for the yeast as you choose. It's not just ferment it and forget it for me now, it's let's see if this batch can win a contest? or let's see if this batch will impress Thirsty, brewchez, or 1n1m3g. That's what I look for now with every batch.

I keep another magnet around just for the purpose of retrieving the dropped stirbar. It pulls it right up the side of the fermentor.
