Where to buy bulk grains?
Looking for grains, unfortunately I have to drive several hours from my area to get any. Anyone know of a cheap mailorder or local? I am in central IL.
Thanks. I am also looking for people in my area to get together once in awhile to share stories, creations, troubleshooting..etc..
Have a nice brew day!

I use Midwest Supplies out of the Twin Cities. They have decent pricing & they will crush them for you.

I drive about an hour from SE IA to Somethings Brewn' in Galesburg. VERY good folks who are knowledgeable and helpful with great prices. How close are you to them?
Thanks, I will check it out.
If you want to check out Somethings Brewn' see http://www.somethingsbrewn.com. Most bulk purchases need to be ordered ahead of time for freshness issues but they usually get things in in about a week.
I was in Pa. over the weekend and was planning on driving back through Akron, Oh on the way home to get a sack at the homebrew shop, but it's a little out of the way.........anyway I was at The North Country Brewing Co. and asked the brewer if I could buy a sack off of him........I got a 55lb. bag for $35, so if there are any brewpubs close you might check with them.... you never know unless you ask ![]()
I also live in cent IL....think that it is possible to take this a step further and grow your own......malt and hops that is? Climate is very similar to germany.
I have plenty of room todo it.

So of that 55 lb bag of grain, how much on average would you use for one 5 gallon batch of say a cream ale or red ale?
Ten or 12 pounds?
Just trying to figure out cost per batch versus extract grain. It cost me on average 75 cents to $1.25 per 12 oz bottle for extract specialty grain for a 5.25 gallon batch before fermentation. ends up about 4 3/4 gallons bottled.

There's one of a series of mega-liquor stores extraordinaire called Friar Tuck's about half an hour away (in Savoy, IL). Besides the best micro-brew selection in the area, they can order all sorts of malts with about a two week wait and no shipping penalty.
The couple times I checked, they beat the NB list price by $10. After stumbling over the prices, the manager I talked to said that the chain is large enough they can get good prices, and that they sell enough that they don't need to mark up much. They have a grinder, if you are interested. Do not expect them to have hops, always out.
In fact, today over lunch I bought a 10lb bag of Carapils and 1lb bag of Crystal for $13. Depends where you are from, but might be worth a drive to one of their other locations just to see how they do business. I can’t vouch for the other'sr pricing as the manager at my local store just seems to add some sort of percentage to the list price.
Friar Tuck in Springfield stinks...........have grain for 2.5 in one pound increments and limited other supplies........I do wonder if they would order me a large sack of grain?
I ordered a big bag of 6-row for 45 dollars no shipping last time. That was 3 months ago when it was my turn. Little bro bought a big bag of 2-row about three weeks ago. I didn't bother to ask how much he paid. Wasn't too concerned with how much he was paying... I'll be a little more worried when my turn comes up.
