%gal, water bottle.
Has anyone used a five gal. water bottle for a seconary? Looking for ways to come up the cheaper storage for aging, for a three gal. batch. I would think they would be food grade since you are drinking out of it anyway. Or would they not be strong enough to hold a stopper in place?
It would be a secondeary so there wouldn't really be any pressure, right?
One of those radom thoughts that just poped in my head. It drives me crazy sometimes.

if it's a short term secondary, you'd probably be ok, but I would avoid using it for longer term, because plastic is oxygen permeable and you could end up with some staling issues...
As I understand it most of the plastic waterbottles are oxygen permeable and can lead to oxidation of your beer.
Thanks guys, well so much for that idea.

Here's something:

They're actually made of the type of plastic that doesn't cause oxidation so you'd be fine.
I was told from the beginning that I should always use a glass carboy since the plastic is harder to keep sanitized... I've never had a bad batch... While a Brewing friend has had a couple of batches go bad using plastic.... Nothing worse than all that work getting ruinned.... Which in the long run costs you more... TheJet
LOL. I went to that site and it wouldnt let me navigate back
::what the heck::
anyhow the plastic bottles say "better than glass" How can they get away with saying that? And they have a spigot on them as well. How can that seal good.
Also, why cant you clean the plastic as well as the glass? Okay I'll read more posts to find some answers. I just got pulled into this out of curiousity.

The big draw to plastic is it's lightweight, and increased safety over glass. I don't think "better" is everyone's opinion, but I've been sold on plastic for 4 years now. The spigot probably seals as well as any other spigot, plus it eliminates the need to rack through a siphon.
I've really looked at the better bottles. I still use a plastic bucket for a fermenter, one because it is easier to clean, and two because it is so much lighter. I have a few carboys I use for secondaries, but I always primary in the bucket. I like the idea of the better bottle as it would be so much light, and if you did drop it, it wouldn't shatter everywhere. I personally do consider them to be better than glass, and I don't even own one.

Alright! One more for plastic! Welcome to the club.
