15 gallon kegs



I just saw an add for Sanke kegs for 75$.  Is this a good deal, or could they be had cheaper.

A good friend of mine installs beer systems in Chicago, and he just bought a small soda company. he called me up a couple mos ago and asked if I could use a few pin lock cornies, I said sure! Well the package came in the mail today, I got 4 pin locks, all with new decklids, and  PRVs, and 8 pin lock QDs (4gas 4liquid) all for the price of a keg of kolsch. My instructions are to brew a kolsch, fill one of the kegs, and he will have it shipped back to him. Pretty good deal dontchathink?



 

Hmmm, sounds like to good a deal.  He's not using you as some kind of beer mule is he?

Wow, great deal.  I just got 3 Sanke kegs for 100$.  After I saw the post for 75$ each, the next day he was running them for 40$ each, and all three for 100$.  I currently have them at the house frickin awsome.
     He's a serious wine maker, and has oak casks quietly aging, and a whole cellar full of wine back to 97.  I gave him a Sixer of the African Amber, and he gave me a bottle of 2007 cabernet.
     I havn't yet decided how I want to do this, use one to ferment, and one for mashing?,  or make a kick ass RIMS system.  I didn't think that I'd ever be able to get my hands on one Keg, let alone three.  The bonus part is they still have the stems in them.  This is probably the biggest score of equipment yet, and now I gotta get to work on how to use them. 
     It will probably take a while to get the table and the setup together, but it seems a hell of alot closer to a kick ass system then when I first started all grain.

 

Just scored a 1/2 barrel keg from my friend.  It had Coors lite in it.  YUK!!!!!!!  My question is how hard is it to clean, it's been sitting in his loft for years (10 at least)  Have a beer meister my wife bought me years ago no problem cleaning it up, it's the keg I'm worried about. Do most LHBS have wooden bungs?

I have a 13.5 gallon keg which I plan to use to try 10 gallon batches. I also have a ten gallon cooler to mash in...... I currently have a smaller keg/ half keg...( 7.5 gal.or so) that has a ball valve in it and the top cut out. Will that be large enough to heat up the sparge water or do I need to look for a bigger pot to heat water? I would like to set all three up so as not to have to move any pieces while heating/ sparging etc.

 

I think that a 7.5 gallon HLT is going to be too small for 10 gal batches.  Just looked over a number of my own 10 gal recipes and most have over 7.5 gallons of sparge water.

 

I was afraid of that. I got it for next to nothing at the local HBS and the owner stated he thought it would be fine because you would not be heating all the water at once but I think he thought I was doing 5 gallon batches..... How do you calculate how much sparge water you will need? Looks like I may need to use my old brew pot for extra water for now until I can get a larger keg/ pan to heat enough for a ten gallon batch.

 

Bull, it depends on whether you batch or fly sparge for volumes. You basically need to calculate your total batch volume preboil, and subtract for grain absorption. So if you want a 1o gallon batch with a 12 gallon preboil, you will need 12 gallons of total water + the amount that will be absorbed by whtevr volume of grain you use.

If you are close, it is no biggy to throw a couple gallons of water on the stove top and just replenish you HLT or MT as you use up the 7 gallons you have.

Most of my recipes need 9-11 gallons for the mash infusion, then I have 2 5.25 gallon coolers I use for HLTs. Today I did the BKB APA and only had 8 gallons of strike water, so after that was replaced with my 10.5 gallons of sparge water, I would have came up short, but I had a few gallons brought to temp on the stove top, to refill the first HLT, and get me my full 15 gallon runoff.
