Added HERMS works too good!
Brewed the recipe I posted in Winter Brew suggestions
- HERMS in action.
So my maiden voyage w/ the HERMS, started recirculating at 30 min in, I usually can hold temp w/o budging first 30 min then it will drop 6-7 deg in the next 30 min. I held 154 for the last 30 min w/ the recirc. Ramped up to 168 deg in 15 minutes to mash out, then fly sparged for 1 hour 15 min.collected 13.5 gallons.
My target OG was 1.025 at 200 deg, (allowing .036 for temp adjustment). I hit 1.042. After boiling down a gallon, I added another gallon of water to dillute, I ended up w/ a 13 gallon finished batch, and an OG of 1.074 after cooling. Problem is it looks like 90% efficiency w/ a 25# grain bill. Never happened before. Does a HERMS do that much for you? I have some dialing in to do!
The good news is after all the kettle loss and whole hop absorption I had almost 6 gallons of finished beer in each carboy, so I can get 2 kegs and a few kicker bottles for gifts.
Ended up spicing it w/ 1tsp ground cinnamon stick, 1tsp allspice, threw in 4 anise scotty terrier candies, and 4 peppermint discs,(couldnt find candy canes anywhere) the boil smelled unbelievable and I could still smell it in the garage this morning.
thats great news i should have a herms done shortly
i see you have a thermanator.. what connections do you use for it? ive been having trouble getting a good setup
It is actually a shirron plate-love it. I use CPC QD's for the wort side and I hvae 1 CPC for the hose in, and home cheapo QD for the hose out. It keaks a good bit,but I got a bus tray from a local resteraunt supply store for $5. I stocked up on a couple of these not only for drip trays, but to soak all my lines and junk in.
AHHHH!
I wont be able to get a recirc set up going till next spring.
But I am glad you got your fired up. You can work out the bugs for me and I'll pester your next year when I have issues.
Congrats.
