Beer barrel pressure leaking?
Hey All,
I have a 40 pint barrel very similar to the Standard 40 pint barrel Brew-it-Yourself sell, but this one is branded by Young’s-u-brew.
I have a problem with this in that although I appear to get successful secondary fermentation, I only get one to two pints dispensed before the pressure disappears so it seems like I'm losing pressure. The brew I've got in there at the moment has had nearly 200gms of sugar added to it! I've tried all sorts - using more Vaseline on the cap seal to making it tighter (I recently got it so tight I had to use Stilsons to get it off again! And the latest attempt is to use PTFE tape as used by plumbers to try and get it to seal.
Has anyone got any tips or similar issues?
Hello keith,
Is this a top tap type of barrel? if so it needs to use the pressure to push the beer up and out. once your beer has fully completed it's secondary fermentation it will not produce any more gas and therefore pressure. this means if it is a top tap then when the natural pressure has been used up, you will need to apply some gas to the keg with some form of injection system to push the beer out. if it has a bottom tap and you are going to use the brew quite quickly afterwards then you can simply crack the top open very slightly to allow the beer to flow when it slows down. this allows air in at the top, but as co2 is heavier will still cover the top surface of the beer, just as with traditional casks. the worst thing to do is let an air bubble come up through the brew by not having enough pressure inside or not allowing air in at the top. that way the air bubble puts all the oxygen and contamination risks all the way through your beer. hope this explains it a bit for you.
All the Best!!!!
