Best Lid for a sankey keg
Hi Guys,
Will a SS pot lid provide a quality seal to keep my batch from becoming contaminated during fermentation?
Any other suggestions on a good lid for a sankey keg/fermented?
Other: I have a few kegs and would like to make fomenters out of them. Ideally I would like an air tight seal between the lid and the top of the keg but I'm having a tuff time finding a lid of some sort with a rubber lip/edge. Any advice.
Thanks
ethan
If you can make a sanitary, air-tight seal, then you can use any sort of a lid.
I have simply taken the dip tube out of a Sankey, and used a #10 stopper to make an airlock. 1.25 inch OD tubing makes a good blow-off if needed instead of an airlock.
Two big issues I had with it: 1) Yeast and biological heat. 2) The damned thing is heavy and hard to move around to transfer.
I'd love to figure out how to make a keg fermented work better, but still be pretty low tech.

Your problem is one I thought about including. But, if I wanted to use something, I'd figure a way to reliably clean it.
One part is chemical. The second is to take a pair of pliers to a big carboy brush and make it into the tool you need. Inspection via a dental or mechanic's mirror and you're good to go.
The 2 problems I mentioned before were the ones that turned me off of using a half barrel keg as a fermented. I know there are others that have done it with a lot of success. Sabco has some available to just purchase outright.
It is an interesting challenge to make it yourself. So, Ezra, if you do it you could become a trailblazer for the rest of us ninnies.
