Brewing Equipment
Hello All,
How long does the equipment such as plastic pipes taps & brewing bucket last ? I have been using the same equipment for over a year now & it all seems to be working ok although the plastic tube is looking a bit cloudy/dull now & the tap at the end is getting stiff.
The bucket looks like new then again its always scrubbed as soon as the beer is moved to the secondary fermenter.
I am currently brewing my beer in bottles & am seriously thinking about trying a barrel I believe you will or should get a smoother beer this way has anyone tried comparing both methods ?
Enjoy!!
Hey darius,
I usually replace my pipes every six months, but barrels only rarely - about every five years seems to be Ok. I've tried barrel and bottle, though never the same kit in both at the same time so can't really comment on the relative smoothness. Personally, I prefer bottles but that's mainly because I've got nowhere handy to keep a pressure barrel ..
Cheers!!!
I've had my correct brew bin for about 2 years and not had any problems. However, it's starting to collect a few scratches so I plan to get a new one.
My 2 barrels (king Kegs) are the same age and are fine - probably because of little or no stirring. I'm hoping to get a few more years out of them yet.
Good Luck!!!
I think buckets and such will remain viable for quite sometime as long as they are kept in good condition - if they start getting scratched up by cleaning, they will start causing problems.
When it comes to tubing however, I think it is best to replace it every 5 or 6 brewings. It is so cheap that I keep a bunch on hand and if it has a cloudy or hazy look I just chuck it and cut a new length.

Depends on where the tubing is in the process, if it's prior to the boil it doesn't really matter how clean it is as long as you're rinsing it after use. If it's used after the boil you could invest in some silicon tubing, I've had some for going on 3 years now, it doesn't stain, and is really easy to clean and sanitize.
