burner upgrade

anyone have any experience or heard anything about this burner?

http://bayouclassicdepot.com/sp2-double … burner.htm

looks like it would handle a sanke kettle nicely at 18" dia?

other favorites or recommendations on burners?

unfortunately a brew magic (or any other high end system) is not in my immediate future!!

I haven't used that burner but I have this one, the Bayou Classic SQ14.  I've done 5 and 10 gallon batches on it without problems.  I know a lot of other guys who use it too and I highly recommend it.

I bought mine from the ACE Hardware website for 50 bucks and had it shipped to the store for free.  There's a store about 5 minutes from my house so it worked out pretty well for me.

FPB,

what kind of kettle are you using?

it seems like a converted keg would hang a little off the edges at 16"x16", but i'm sure still plenty stable.

what about BTU's? does it take very long to get 11-12 gal rolling?

i'd guess the double burner would be faster, but i wonder if you burn up a lot more fuel? maybe irrelevant if your burning a lot longer on a single burner?

thanks for the input

I use a 10 gallon kettle that's exactly 16" wide.  I've done a couple of 10 gallon batches with a 20 gallon kettle that I have to borrow from a buddy and its a bit wider than the burner stand .  I don't remember how long its taken to bring it up to boil but I don't remember it being so long that it became aggrevating.   I have a couple friends who brew with the SQ14 with keggles and haven't run into any problems.  Even if it hangs off a bit I doubt it'll matter much.

We've had a discussion about BTU's here on this forum a couple times before.  Advertised BTU's are sort of a funny thing because I don't think they're measured the same from manufacturer to manufacturer and I think a year or two ago there was a change in how they were measured.  But, so you have an idea how well it works, I double batch sparge and usually fire up my kettle while I'm in the middle of my first sparge.  Usually my boil is ready to go once I drain my tun for the second time.  Many times it reaches a full boil before I've finished sparging and have had to turn it down.

In addition, its pretty sturdy.  I'm able to stand on it and I weigh over 200 pounds.  Plus you can pick up leg extensions online to raise it up another 18" I think.  I'm thinking about making my own leg extensions out of some square stock I have.

I have this one...

It rocks.  Seriously....Rated at 210K BTUs, but as mentioned, advertised ratings aren't always accurate.  All I know is that it sounds like mini-jet, and gets 12 gallons hose water in a 15 gallon pot rolling in under 25 minutes.  I actually have to turn it down when I drain from mashtun to kettle, so it doesn't start boilng too hard before I sparge.  It literally only takes a few minutes to get 8 gallons hot wort rolling hard...
