Cheapest price for a keg or keg type kettle
What is the Cheapest legal way to get a keg or keg conversion. I cant afford a kettle and really want built 3 tier system.
i know a few people that aguired a keg through a restaurant. just asked the place if they had any kegs that where empty. although ive heard that it is not really all that legal to own a keg from a brewer. that keg, as far as ive heard, is always the property of the brewing company even when it has been "paided" for. i also got my keg from a restaurant. good luck
Check with the local distributors in your area or a local brewery. Sometimes they get kegs back that they cannot use anymore. As long as they fit your use, then they can and will sell them to you for a good deal. Remember you are going to have to cut the top off then convert it to your use with spigots or whatever else you wish to have on the keggle. Also, you will probably have to modify your burner platform to accept the size during boils. Handy at metal work or welding stainless steel, great value ahead I see young one. If you don't know how to do these things... it will be a nightmare. Have a seasoned pro help or ask if a welder will charge you a nominal fee for the work. Add it all up and then decide if you need to purchase a system ready to go, or if a build will save you $$.
A 20 gallon aluminum pot would still be cheaper than a used keg. Unless you can find a keg for free.
The only way to do this legally is to start hitting local scrap yards and looking for one. However, they'll charge you for the stainless steel, which might be more expensive than a new aluminum pot of the same size.
you can find used kegs on ebay and they usually run around $80 with shipping sometimes cheaper you just need to make shure they let all the old beer out for shipping.make shure you get a sankey style the kind with the handles built in the other type has a bung hole in the side right in the middle you dont want that and,
dont get one with valve installed they charge you a ton a money for it and its installed too high.
for some reason these ppl selling them think home brewers are going to fill them with beer
you can go to the scrap yard but people dont usually turn kegs in because you dont get much money for stainless steel scrap and they make great bbq pits, or gas tanks for go karts.
Used kegs on ebay are likely not legal.
I just bought a 15.5 gallon legal half keg kettle from Homebrewing.org for $129.99 with one cuppling installed. $14 for shipping. I was looking at 10 gallon stainless pots at 140+.

turned it for their deposit
Totally legal.......this place also has ball-lock kegs for $22.50 and 8 packs for $160..........15.5 gallon brew kettle.......$65

I got mine from a local brewery for $15 each. The spears were mangled and the scrap yard would not accept them unless they were cut in half. They work for me and were very legal.
