Diffusion Stone

Here's a question for you tech-heads out there...is it worth it to buy a Diffusion Stone for my keg?  I understand it breaks the CO2 down and helps it permeate the beer better, but how much time does it shave off of the force-carbonation? Just wondering who has experience with these smile

 

Would that be the same as an airstone?  Used for aerating the wort?

 

My experience is that air stones work no better than raising the pressure to 40 PSI and force carbonating. I can have a keg carbonated in less than a day if I watch it.

 

doesnt 40 psi overcarbonate your beer, and produce too much foam?  i have tried to force carbonate in 24 hours, when i was in a pinch, and no matter what, the beer didnt hold the carbonation in suspension.  it just all fizzled out after i poured it, and i was left with a pretty flat beer.

 

Am I missing something.  Im not sure what your force carbonation process is, but I dont understand why you are waiting 24hrs or even an hour.  You dont need any kind of diffusion stone either. 

We use corny kegs and set the CO2 to 30 or 40 PSI and then just gently shake or roll the keg to mix the CO2 into the beer.  It takes about 3 to 5minutes.  If you let the system equilibrate overnight, you get a better pour, but you can drink it right away if you want.  Of course you need to have the beer racked into a clean keg before you do the carbonation process or you will stir up all the unwanted sediment.  Let me know if this isnt making any sense.

That makes sense.  I think some people don't like the shaking thing and carbing that fast can lead to carbonic acid development or bite (I can't say I really know if that's true).  I have done it your way in a pinch for a party or something.  Normally, I am pretty patient.  I just set it to the PSI that gets me what I want in volumes and walk away.  A week later I am good to go.
