filtering beer
has anyone filtered their beer? how and what equipment did you use?
I used water filter housings in series with a 5 micron roughing to a 1 micron to try to get a Kolsch cleared. It was a pain, a lot of stuff to clean, filters are one time use, not worth it.
If I filter my beer that I'm planning on carbonating in the bottle will it filter out too much yeast and cause problems with carbonation.
Good topic
I have just put to secondary a fruit beer----raspberry. There is a lot of sediment. I am thinking I should filter but do not want to filter yeast. I am planning on carbonating with primer. Any ideas????
I used to filter with a combination filter funnel as part of my brew kit. I don't anymore since I really like cloudy beer and it's just more work for me.
But I have seen many brewers use grain bags, although I don't think that is the best method because of the mesh spacing. Strainers seem to work for me.
I strained my wort through a straining bag when making the transfer from kettle to fermenter on my last batch. I suppose you would consider that filtering. The hops and Irish moss clogged up the bag though and made a bit of a mess. Still, I like the straining bag. It has an elastic band and fits right over your bucket. I just need to make some adjustments. My wife suggested pre-straining through a sanitized wire colainer since the screen is wider. I'll be checking this thread regularly for any ideas.
thats not quite the same, i'm thinking of some true filtering device
Filtering help/advice please!!
This is the current condition of my berry oatmeal wheat. It has been in secondary for 2 weeks. I have tried a cold crash, left it in secondary at about 45 degrees for a week & nothing is happening.
I don't have any REAL filtering equipment, but need to try something.
What about racking to another carboy through a funnel with a coffee filter, a tube attached to bottom of the funnel to limit aeration, & a large binder clip to control the flow?
give it time, Brewski. i have had a brew in secondary for five weeks, and it just started clearing up. i had about given up hope as well, but time is on your side, yes it is.
if it sits for weeks and weeks with no clearing and a cloudy beer is anathema to you, i think you will have to invest in some filtering equipment.

I am only assuming you used berris oatmeal and wheat in this? Sounds yummy, but all 3 of those are going to give haze and cloudiness. Completely w/ in profile I would drink it and enjoy. Pectic enzyme would help in the future, but that will not clear up the wheat contribution. The commercial examples that are clear (or like boston beer works blueberry ale) I would think use fruit extract and not actual fruit and bright tanks
