First Time use of Star San
Ok, so I have moved onto Star San as my sterilizing agent, and I am unsure the best way to use it. I've heard just mixing a small batch, and putting it into a spray bottle, then spraying my equipment, then of course I could mix a batch in my fermenting vessel and cleaning everything in it. I have also heard you can reuse Star San (PLEASE correct me if this is wrong).
Professional Board, please give me your thoughts and uses of Star San and if one way is better than the other.
Always reading posts!
You can make a small batch and spray your equipment, but I find that making at least one gallon in my fermentor is the easiest thing to do. Then you can just cap the fermentor and shake it all around a few times for good coverage.
You can reuse that one gallon on a couple fermentors in necessary, or pour it into a small wash basin to sanitize smaller equipment, like hoses and airlocks.
Lastly, all your equipment needs to be clean prior to sanitization. Star-san is a sanitizer not a cleaner.
I make up a 5 gallon bucket of the stuff and keep it handy. After making a batch, I'll clean my hoses, and toss them and my plate chiller, and all odds and ends into the starsan.
I use it for bottling now, and it's really handy in the spray bottle.
P.s. for some extra power in the spray bottle, try shaking it up as you spray. The foaming action of the star san gives it some extra psi as it exits the bottle.
+1 to everything they said.
And dont let any standing solution sit on your countertop, it is not like standing water, wipe it away, you will not only make it superclean, but discolor it as well. Think of it like bleach and you'll be fine.
Thanks fellow brewers, one further question though. To sanitize my bottles, is it possible to put them in the dishwasher, and use the star san (have done this with other sanitizers)?

No need to...Star San is the sanitizer...you could use the dishwasher to clean them, and then give them a few sprays of SS before you fill them, and you'll be good..
No, I meant put them in the dishwasher, and use the Star San as the "soap" in the dishwasher. Run it through a quick cycle, hence sanitizing them (of course after they are clean from grime and such). Anyone else run Star San through their dishwasher, is it safe?
Star San needs to be diluted properly....without knowing exactly how much water your dishwasher uses on a cycle, you wouldn't know how much to put in...I wouldn't do it myself....

I would think with the massive foaming action of StarSan, you'd have it coming out your dishwasher seams in short order. Make for an interesting story though! ![]()
