Glass Carboy vs. Better Bottles

well but I bought mine at walmart for 6.50 per 5 gal BB and they are not like the ones everyone talks about because the neck is different in a bad way. its hard to seal its too big to take the cork or drilled plugs so i modified it to take the 5 gallon carboy caps. these are really nice because they are easy to move and store no big deal to move them around when cleaning or washing. I just wish I had a better way to seal them. I recommend getting one of each and that way you can have the best of both worlds.

I just bought a BB for my secondary vessel.  I was really swaying back and forth, but after someone at the supply store told me about how he had an entire batch and his floor ruined by his wife accidentally dropping a jar of food on his glass carboy, and after thinking about how clumsy my wife and I can be, it was an easy decision.  In my lab experience with various plastics and such, I wouldn't be too concerned with the oxygen permeability.  Some cell culture mediums that are very sensitive to oxidation come in PET bottles so I'm comfortable with leaving my beer in it for a few weeks.  I can understand the purist wanting to stick to glass since it's a proven material for brewing, but for my dollar I'll take a BB for ease of handling, cleaning, and safety.

I love the BBs, but they have one drawback- volume. A 6 gallon primary just dont cut it. if they made a 7 gallon primary, I would only buy these. Secondaries are perfect no complaints. I am atually just about to rack a porter onto some vanilla in a secondary I just kegged a DIPA from,
