Good prices??

Anyone else have any information on commercial kegs and what they are made of? Seems to be a couple of different opinions out there? There seems to also be a couple of different philosophies regarding whether aluminum is acceptable for brewing or not. Where is the best place to get information on this? I had planned to by a SS pot from somewhere until the local beer salesman offered me a keg for free.Still would like to modify it and use that so that I can invest my money on other equipment but don't want to do it at the expense of ruined batches or health issues.

kegs are SS.  I have two of them, one from stevens boint brewery, one from miller.  There very well may be aluminum kegs out there, but I've never seen them.  But odds are 99.9% of them you find will be stainless.  The price HAS gone up on deposits because people are stealing them to recycle.

just a reference for ya lol

"Why do we make kettles from kegs ?
The reasons are several . . . let's talk !

Kegs are made from fine, food-grade 304 stainless steel. Not
aluminum that can carrode from caustic cleaners
"

skervy did you post awhile back that you converted a keg with a dremmel tool??

That's correct.  I used the new reinforced disks (they're black).  It took all 5 disks but i got a smooth cut and none of them exploded like the old sanding disks.

you are a genius.. and now i ANOTHER project in the future! muahahaha

gotta love the dremmel tool

are these what you are talking about?

Exactly.  If I were you I'd buy two packs.  I just barely made it through my keg with the 5 disks that came in the pack.   - And don't forget to use eye protection.....

that definitely beats my other plan of renting a sawzall and probably safer too

Mentioned the need for a large boiling pot to a friend who mentioned it to a another friend who happens to be a regional guy for one of the big major breweries and presto.... keg is on it's way. Coolers and valves will go on order once it arrives and AG it is. I guess I need to brew a couple of batches up right away to hold me over while I tinker with it .

I bought 2 Gott 10 gallon coolers a few weeks ago at Home depot they are no longer selling Gott and are clearanceing them out. I paid 16 $ each
