Grindmaster coffee grinder to crush grain?
I just found a Grindmaster Coffee grinder for sale. It has a knob for different grinding size. Could this work for crushing grain? Does anybody know how this works?
I would say no. Coffee grinders, even at there most coarse setting will usually still grind up too much grain into flour. I have a Barley Crusher, shipped was about $140 I think....
I don't think that it's a good idea to use a coffee grinder to crush your grains. The grind will probably be too fine and lead to stuck sparges. Even a coarse ground coffee setting is too fine for homebrewing purposes. I don't reccomend it.
I also use a barley chusher, and I got it for around the same price.
I don't even own a mill, I get my grain precrushed, and I grind my specialty grains with my magic bullet blender. It's great because you just pulse 2 or 3 times, and there you go perfect crush.
I would own a malt mill, I love the idea of crushing the grains yoursef right before the mash, but with me, it's a time thing, and right now it would take to much time. I either order off the internet precrushed, or I buy the grains at my LHBS, and use their super high tech crusher.
I think it would work great to prepare coffee beans to be added to the mash or secondary.
But that's about it.
If you'd like to get a very affordable mill, I reccomend the Grizzly Mill. It is sold on Amazon.com and I got mine for around $25. It is a burr mill that is basically a Corona knock off. It isn't as high on throughput or as consistant as a barley crusher, but it gets the job done just fine. There is a whole family of these types of mills ranging in price from $20 to $90. As a nice caveat, it will also grind coffee perfectly for use in a French press on its finest setting. Just remember to clean it between coffee and grains.
