GROWING HOPS

The hops grow back every year correct, And if they come back do they send up more shoots each year?
Yes and Yes......but the second yes is not what your looking for, you want four or five good bines out of each rhizome each year.......read up on growing hops because I believe you can split the root as it gets older and get another rhizome to plant.....but read up on it because I'm not sure how it's done......I haven't done my reading yet ![]()
End of August....these are my second harvest of cones from this year that will be ready for picking in a week or two.......... there aren't as many nor are they as big but none the less there are a few more
well i think it will be better luck next year for me, no cones at all, i know its the first year but i was hoping for some.
k any advice for post season care?
any advice for post season care?
do we leave the main stem to find growth for next year, or trim it down above , at, or below the dirt?
Sacrifice a bottle of beer and pour it on the ground in tribute the beer gods?
I'm in the same boat here BrewLuva. High hopes for cones from first year plants, but to no avail.
I think I will have to make an offering to the hop gods, and sacrifice a bottle or two. ![]()
Just an FYI.
My willamet hops didn't come back this year for some reason. I think I over composted them and they couldn't push through. Regardless, I don't get enough sun in my yard, I am almost entirely surrounded by larger mature trees. Its great for my lawn but I can't grow tomoatoes, cukes or HOPS!!! My bines never really put out many cones. Maybe just 20-30.
Anyhow, I was so disgusted with the poor growing conditions and the failure of my Willies to come back that I never stung up or pruned my cascade plant.
The FYI is that I let it grow wildy on the ground near the patio and it never sporuted any flowers. I am not surprised and this is what I expected.
Next year the wife and I are moving to a new place and there will be plenty of growth opportunity at the new place. I plan to get some more cascade and willamet as well as maybe something else. I will go hog wild next year. Start my own little hop farm.

cool!, hope next year will be better for me, i got nothing this year
Dartgod your hops look sexy and I am very jealous! Alton Brown did a bit on good eats about drying hebs. He layed them in filters for furnaces and stacked em up, bunjeed them all together and bunjeed that to a box fan, let it rip for a couple of days and dehydrated a ton of herbs. Can't wait to grow some next season.
Very nice! This is some thing I'd like to try next year.....the slideshow was pretty cool too....
