Growing Hops 2008

Try Freshops.com    I think they will, but there is some sort of certification that you have to pay extra for.

i ordered 8 rhizomes how much can one expect to get form a root?

I was wondering if anyone knows how agressive the root system of hops is. I have a buddy who is willing to lend me a corner of his yard, but he doesnt want to plant anything that is going to potentially destroy his foundations (like bamboo) or be impossible to pull up.

I have read that they only really spread if you let their vines lay on the ground and sprout, but I've also heard that they can be pretty invasive... anyone?

just ordered a bunch from fresh hops (2 cascade, 2 centennial, 2 kent goldings, 2 mt. hood, and 2 willamette).  All other big sites I checked (northern brewer, more beer, williams) are all out!!  I planned on combining shipping when I ordered my plate chiller but I guess not...

I am relatively new to home brewing but have decided to attempt growing my own hops this year. I ordered them through fresh hops. I ordered a Cascade, Sterling, Williamette, Centennial, and Nugget varieties. I live in South/Central MN so our growing season is not too short but from what I understand growing a harvestable hop requires 120 days or so. Is this correct from those here that have succeeded in the past at growing them? I decided to start them in-doors in plastic flower box liners with an organic vegetable potting soil, and then will transplant them around the beginning of May when the threat of frost is gone. Is this a good plan?

I have a good site to transplant them at, and additionally intend to build a trellis for them to climb. I have learned a lot from reading past threads but any advice I can get is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I got the same as you except Crystal instead of  Centinnial.  I've got mine in pots of compost now, & they're starting to go.  I'll transplant to the trellis this weekend.  I'm a little ahead of your weather, KC is a little south.

They like compost & sand, & don't overwater.  Good Luck.  I bought hops today for $3.50 oz + shipping.  I think that we'll appreciate our own hops.

I have mine planted in the flower box liners as I had said in my previous post. I did that because I would like to get optimal growth out of these hops plants with our shorter Minnesota winters. Three of the Five Rhizomes have sprouted very well however I think I may need to slow the growth soon because I will not be able to get them in the ground till about the beginning of May. I have rad that once a hop Rhizome is established (aka at least 2nd year) they can potentially produce up to 2LB. Anyone have any further information on potential production of a hop rhizome.

got 3 srounts pushing out of the ground on one of my cascades and 1 pushing out from one of my mt hoods as of today.  They've all been in the ground for 10 days now, but the weather we've had has been terrible (cold and rainy/snowy)

My 3rd year Cascades coming up.......I'll have many bines to choose from, you are supposed to use the best 3 or 4 per plant and I have about 50 to choose from.......

I will post some pictures this weekend.  All five of mine have sprouted now. Where do all you guys live. I can't safely think about getting mine in the ground till the last weekend here in April (24-26). I was planning on doing a descent trellis that is about 8 feet high or so, and then was considering doing something llke I believe Dart did with the tall pvc pipe in  bucket of concrete and then run the rope to the trellis so the vines can get longer. Any other ideas, and or photos of how other people do it. What kind of yield do you other folks get off of your plants?
