Growing Hops 2008
I live around milwaukee, WI. the last couple of weeks after I put the rhizomes in the ground have been nasty... hell it snowed on saturday... but these things are pretty resiliant... the northwest where there grown isn't exactly tropical.
the last couple days have been sunny and mid 60's (WELL above average) and I now have sprouts poking through on both cascades and one mt hood. still nothing from the goldings, centennials, or williamette... but it's still early. They'll pop as the days get warmer.

A question for veteran hop growers..I started mine about three weeks ago, and they are doing well indoors. The bad news however is I have to transplant them, One vines broke off while I was getting it to go around a spindle. Will this re-grow or is this vine dead?
I finally got my rhizomes planted.......Cascade, Goldings, Mittelfruh, and Tettnang.........
Here are how my 3 year old Cascades are doing........I just trimmed them down to the healthiest bines and are trying to get them trained to run out the lines I have.........

The nugget rhizome i planted last week has already sprung through the soil however the cascade is yet to make an appearance.
I'm on round two with my hops this year. I first planted them with good southern exposure in the yard but after the shoots came up they withered away. Hoping to save the rhyzomes I dug them up and replanted in big buckets with potting soil and better drainage. My cascade has re-appeared and seems to be growing well. Still no sign of the sterling or fuggle.
Well didnt get any pride of ringwood, but found a supplier in b.c
Finally arrived today, and will be in the grd this weekend
2 cascade
1 brewers gold
2 centenial
2 kents
2 willimette
Gonna try with a pergola for the cascade
And a runner along a fence for a cple more
Rest going to a buddies farm.. we've strung 5 1/4" cables from about 40' up a tree and ran them to the grd 15' apart and 25' from the base.... If they dont work out...
Least the tree wont fall down ![]()
I'm trying this for the first time this year. I'm not much for gardening, but the hops plant seems simple enough to grow. I didn't want to deal with tilling and such, so I bought some big planters and have started them there. We'll see how they go this year, maybe next year I'll put them in the ground somewhere (not any really great spots in my yard, will have to get a little creative there).
The Willamette have sprouted nicely and have started to curl around the twine I staked out. Cascade, Nugget and Centennial have all sprouted to different degrees, so far, so good. It's fun to see them growing, a little more every day. I'll see if I can post some pictures soon.
