Is it harmful for thermometer?

If i leave the thrmometere in the pot ,in other means i dont like to hold it in my hands ,is it ok with it or i should avoid from this . may be get it back after some time .is there is any harm to it?

I think it just depends on the type of thermometer you have. Besides, if it's one that goes up to hundreds of degrees Fahrenheit, then it should be made to tolerate that kind of temperature, though prolonged heat exposure can damage most things.

Most thermometers will not be damaged in the course of a normal, hour-long boil.  I recently invested in a floating thermometer, which I leave in the wort throughout the entire process to accurately monitor the boil.  I think it only cost me $7 or so from www.northernbrewer.com.  Totally worth every penny big_smile

If you buy a thermometer from a homebrew store, you're pretty safe. A one-hour boil won't hurt the thermometer.

I also leave my floating thermometer in the kettle during the wntire process : mash and boil.  I like to check it often to make sure I am still in my target temperature range.  If you have a homebrew therm or a candy therm, it is fine for it to be exposed to high heat.

If you are using a non-floating glass thermometer, I would avoid letting it rest on the bottom of your kettle, as the direct heat could potentiall break the thermometer and would cause an inaccurate reading.  A floating thermometer should have not problems staying in for the full boil, nor would most probe types that clip onto the side of the kettle.
