Have You Used Rubbermade Brute , Cheap Foodsafe/winesafe primary

Hi All,

I've heard that some people have used Rubbermade Brute or equivalent trash cans for their primary fermentation.
Does anybody know if,
1. They are food grade safe?
2. Would they give any plastic flavor during extended maceration and long primary fermentation (8-10 days)?
3. Any other reasonably cheap alternatives you suggest?
Thanks.

Hello santiago,

Brute's are good for primary as long as there marked Food Grade (NSF 2) and LDPE or HDPE. HDPE is what you really want because it doesn't let as much air through if you want to do extended maceration.

If it doesn't state food grade leave it. It could be recycled plastic and you won't know what your getting.
Look for the white ones (which usually denotes HDPE) at your local HBS.

Cheers!!!
