Hosed my hose

Well actually I hosed my auto-siphon last night.

I had 8 gallons of 180F PBW solution sitting on the burner.  I tossed in a lot pf plastic ware to get a hot rinse on the stuff for a good cleaning prior to brewing tonight.  You bucket lids, airlock pieces and caps.  The I said to myself.  I wonder if that water is too hot for that plastic.  I better cool it off with some water.

So I put my autosiphon in the pot and start sucking out hot PBW.  I go one to other things.  I come back and half the solution is out and I am ready to dump in a bucket of cold water to try and cool things off.

So I pull out what was once my straight auto-siphon and it now has a slight J shape to it.  It melted enough that it bent under its own weight I think.  I immediatly dumped it back in the hot water and tried to re-bend it myself.... no good its hosed.

However, as many of you know  I HATE my auto-siphon so good riddance.  But I went to the store today to get yeast and I convinced myself to buy a new one, but I got the smaller bore one (hopefully it works better than the larger one.)

Moral of the story:  Don't put your tube in hot PBW.
I'll try and put up a couple picks of the J shaped auto siphon later this weekend.

That sucks man......I've melted an airlock before if it makes you feel any better....of course, that was with open flame when it rolled off the table on to the lit burner during my first batch....

That is a dreadful thought to be completely honest.....

Ha that's funny.  big_smile  You talk so negatively about auto siphons, I didn't even think you owned one anymore.

What size siphon did you have before and which did you buy?  I think I've seen 3 different sizes out there.

I'm actually going to modify my auto-siphon, with some ss screening I have, wrapped and secured somehow at the end.  That way, it shouldn't suck as much gunk, although I've never really had a major problem.....it can always get better.....
