It's a Girl!

Had yet another kid...3rd one now, some sort of side effect of too much homebrew I guess.  Only one is school age, so the two girls are always home.  But anyway it made me want to keep my whole process indoors since I am home with them many days while the wife is at work.  I researched and built 2 heat sticks.  They are made just like this guy said to:  http://www.cedarcreeknetworks.com/heatstick.htm  his pictures look just like mine.  They brought 6.5 gallons of 65 degree tap water to mash temp in 35 minutes, and from there was boiling in 15-20 more.  One is 2000w and the other 1650W Low Watt Density, both are 120V.  They both heat a kettle up quickly, but one cannot sustain a boil, I need both the whole time, a bit dissapointing to have to dedicate two household circuits for a few hours, but oh well.  Now I can keep everything going in the basement next to the kids' play room and hang out with them during the slow periods in brewing, and quickly respond to the egg timer mash/hop/etc. alarm.  Best of both worlds, and women say we can't multi-task.  To the 'brew cave'!  Oh wait one is crying...

Congrats man. Good luck with everything.

congratulations! and props to you for figuring out a way to still brew and be a good dad!

Congratulations!

Congratulations!!

You run both of your heatsticks off of 20am GFCI outlets? the 2000 watt stick doesn't trip any circuits for you?

Good luck -- maybe brew a nice barleywine or a mead, and cellar it for your daughter's 21st birthday!

Congrats and +1 on the barleywine idea smile

Both sticks ran on their own 20A circuits with out an issue, my undersized(16ga.) extension cord got warm, not hot, but warm.  I will be buying a heavier gague.  Other than that, no circuits popping.  The 2000W draws 12A, so it should be good to go, as long as no water or wort leaks inside, the GFI should stay on.  I was really hoping one stick would maintain a boil instead of two.  One of the circuits I use is the one that the ejector pump for my septic is plugged into, but if it is just me and the girls in the basement, there really are no drains being used for that 4-5 hours other than one or two toilet flushes.

As far as the mead and barley wine ideas, they are good on paper, but with my family history, they wouldn't make it to her 21 month!

Ha! I just remembered that I had a heavier gague cord at one time, but cut it up to wire in a Johnson Temp Controller for a chest freezer!  The sad sad irony...

Congratulations!
It has been found that producing children is attributed with having too much time on your hands.
Obviously you're not brewing enough!

Major congrats on your little girl!  my only condolence is that they become teenage girls.  ( I had two).  tongue  I tease!   Girls are awesome.

Also, thank you for proving my point that a man can watch the kids and do other things.  I knew it was only the man-pact keeping it a secret!!!

Great job.

Cograts!! Just remember kids
are like beer. You can ignore them till they're mature and no good, or you can enjoy them from the time they're young untill they mature. Either way both are gone way too quick!!

Sorry I'm a little late to the party Firewater, but Congrats.  And,... there is a secondary use for your heat sticks.  Fending off the BOYS.  If one gets too close, he gets branded with your own personal style.  big_smile
